Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

It took me months to recover from working at Verizon

I left at the start of the year. It took me months to repair the damage that place did to both my mental and physical health. I didn't even realize how bad it was until I left. My advice to everybody still stuck there is to leave as soon as you can. Your life will improve so much. Working at a place with a normal work culture has made me a new man.

@3dta, you're under the belief the OP left this job fearful, and is now back on this board only because they are checking their new employer's section of the layoff .com, still living a life ridden with fear? Strange

@3igr, just FYI - this isn't the only board here, and people are allowed to check more than one board upon swithing their job.

Yet you still haunt this board like a jaded lover who just cannot move on, who's longing for something.

Several replies back, it references HR does not understand. HR knows everything that goes on within the company. Do not ever expect HR to side with an employee vs their management. HR has never been and will never be in favor with the individual employee. This is the mistake made by many due to the HR propaganda machine. HR is to prevent the company from being sued. If you happen to reap some type of benefit, then take it and move on. HR was not working on your behalf, you were only fortunate enough to receive the scraps from Longshanks table.

The good old days for wireless have been over for quite some time and has been a commodity for many years now. The bs of rebranding as a technology company several years ago was only an attempt to boost the stock price. Technology stocks at that point in time had more upside, so the executives attempted the rebranding bs. I was never sure how anyone could make the statement that VZW is a technology company with a straight face. The site for a tower is determined. An external company is hired to build the tower, the equipment is built by a different company and installed on the tower, the handsets are manufactured by another company. I am over simplifying to make a point, but the majority of what VZW provides is by acquiring the license. VZW has very little to do with the technology piece.

And 5G is one of the biggest hoaxes ever perpetrated upon mankind. Everyone started talking about 5G years before it was available. How it would change lives and make everything better, what a load. It allows for faster speeds, period. This faster speed only allows you to reach your maximum monthly amount of allowable GB on the unlimited plan. Please read the previous sentence again to realize how ridiculous it sounds. I had many heated discussions related to the "unlimited" plans, sure everyone is doing it, but it does not make it right. The counter is the customer may continue to use as much data as possible after reaching the maximum 5G allowed, but at 2G speeds. It is difficult to use 2G and speed in the same sentence. Like a big guy having lunch at the all you can eat buffet. The place provides you with huges plates for the two trips to the buffet, then trip three and beyond you are provided with a saucer that fits the size of an espresso cup.

I said to my boss during 2015, if the company plans to reduce headcount by 40%, then why not go all out. RIF 90% of the employees, since you want to rid yourself of 40%, then ship at least half of the remaining positions overseas. So, RIF 90%, one price point of $37.50 monthly unlimited, no phone subsidy, no incentives, no nothing. No more marketing, no sales teams, and only require about 100 customer service reps. And, each time a customer contacts customer service, bing, a $25 fee. Yes, the real number is around 40% total reduction. This is due to millions of dollars spent for external advisors to provide an assessment and recommendations. No matter how obscene the recommendations, when a company pays millions for them and receives the pretty 200 page color, laminated presentations, they will follow. Think about how many years "Finance Transformation" has been going on. I remember when they first showed the graph during a quarterly meeting. VZ was located at the bottom left of the graph and the peers were located at the upper right. No other details provided, nothing about what those two points mean, who plotted those points and what criteria was used, along with what does it take to move to the holy grail dot. About all I ever witnessed was the selection of a location and rebranding it as "center of excellence". My thoughts have always been if you have four locations, does this mean that three of them under achieve. How about all four locations become excellent.

There are so many things to point out. Pretty much every acquisition has failed along with anything rushed to market.

So, after this long rambling diatribe, the best thing is to work until it is your time, save, save, and save. You work two weeks, you receive a paycheck for two weeks, and at the end of the two weeks, neither owes the other anything. After my departure, I worked at three different companies. Every corporation is just as sc--wed up, but sort of fun, because you are new and have no idea what it is yet. Your pay will be 20% less, at a minimum, but the most important thing is you will continue to work hard for your own sanity, but you really do not care, because you have no vested interest in any company

I quit after bonuses were paid out and I experienced NO recovery issues…nothing to recover from. I was on a great team, and enjoyed my work there. When you’re a manager, you’re shielded from a lot of the political stuff, and my manager always treated me fairly and created a great work environment. I honestly enjoyed my time there, and just wish the company had more strategic people in leadership roles—if they did, I might still work there. But my coworkers were the best!

Been here 27 years...leaving....and partially retiring....I just dont have it in me anymore to stay with the political non-sense. VZ did provide for me and family...but the ever doom and gloom twice a year is enough to drain any human. True, grass is not greener...but there are other opportunities out there....Life is short...find your happy place....

For those who complain about mental health, you DO NOT wait for years and find out your mental health is getting worse ,
As soon as you do not like working at Verizon then QUIT
Nobody is holding you up at Verizon

This is so true over 15+ years and my mental health is worst than it ever been. HR doesn't understand that that some leadership is so toxic and will block you from getting ahead b/c they don't like you. Been through so much toxicity and HR doesn't believe you. This year was the worst. I am a VSP pusher too and Sept can't come quick enough. My first step is regain my mental.

I feel happiness and health is determined at VZ by:

  1. people you support whether just a manager, many managers in many groups, or coworkers but it has been a long while since I worked with anyone on anything.
  1. what the department does and what you do in it.

VZ HRs and Senior Leaders can do anything else but for me none of it ever mattered. Of course pay and benefits are important but it is the day to day that matters.

20+ year VSP volunteer expecting September kiss off.

Been at VZ for under 10 years, but have worked at many other companies. That last comment from the person here for 28 years says it all - the grass is not always greener. I've met many VZ people who have been with the company most, if not all, of their careers and they don't seem to realize that some of the things that VZ does not do well ARE done well at other companies, BUT every company has its own cr-p and they'll find out quickly that their new company does many things worse than VZ. Just go to other company listings on this website and you'll see many examples. VZ is not a bad company. Maybe you had a bad boss or a bad coworker that soured your view on VZ as a whole. And before you say, "Look at our stock, look at the RIFs, look at the poor choices of upper management", I'll ask you to look at the industry. VZ/ATT/TMo are all in trouble and are all shedding staff and cutting wherever they can cut. Huge investments in 5G without seeing the returns (yet) means everyone's tightening their belts and seeing how they can make it through the lean times. Leave if you choose, but just know you may not find that magical place the OP claims to have discovered.

I am at VZ 28 years. I took the VSP cause I am 64 and timing perfect for me. It was a good run, managers mostly good, great benefits and vacation time. WFH with flex hours. Very nice $$$. The grass not always greener. Good luck, happy retirement.
