Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

VSP - better offers or layoffs round?

Apparently not enough people went for VSP. There is a school of thought that there will be better VSP offered, and the one claiming that additional cleanup will be conducted via layoffs. Anyone have any ideas or information on how this will be resolved? I didn’t take VSP, but I would think some more if there is a better package on offer.

A better offer is not coming. In the “management” world, headcount is always being cultivated. By that I mean targeted head count reduction is a constant over time. Sometimes it’s a sheer cost thing. Other times it really is a “your job is not needed” due to divestitures or a product you support is cut. The latter has happened a few times in my group.

Overall my group has grown over the past year. So a job is eliminated and you are RIF’d with X weeks to find yourself another job in VZ. Then you are off the books and a new headcount (maybe two new heads or three) is opened in the group you left very shortly afterwards. But the headcount is for a different job. That just in my relatively medium sized world.

I think this VSP was not an OMG we need to cut costs (though we do) - but reducing cost is a benefit. But it does get a lot of the folks out that are waiting for retirement or are disgruntled or those who have not kept their skills relevant or for whatever reason.

Verizon is perfectly happy with the numbers they got is my guess. I think a good bit of headcount will be opened up again by the end of the year with furious hiring in Q1 to bring in new younger blood from the outside. I know my group is getting younger all the time. I’m in my early 40s and ima feel like a dinosaur sometimes.

My point? None really other than to say ain’t no better offer coming.

VZ has consistently dropped headcount from the start and I feel like they always will. They may slow down if the bring call centers back and/or go all in on corporate stores but c’mon thst ain’t gonna happen.

The economy has been bad for a few years. If it doesn't recover over thee next few years, expect more of the same. Dell just laid off 12,500 this week, so Verizon isn't the only company going through this turmoil. If the economy picks up, things will get better - until the next time - it's the cycle we are unfortunately now in. You now have to expect layoffs at some point in your career, and do your best to survive, and not depend on severance packages (which no company is obligated to provide)

I’ve focussed too much on my job for 25 years to the detriment of my health and life outside of VZ. I’m sure my offshore backfill will be great based on all I’ve heard over the years.

Anyone think of maybe focusing on your job, servicing the customer, increasing sales, etc.? Perhaps then we might not need RIFs. But then there are always the corporate leeches who need to be RIFed anyway. Scrape off the leeches and disinfect asap.

There might be a better package.....in 5 years after 10 rounds of layoffs. Unless they get rid of the Swedish Meatball and his cronies, get some good upper management, quit worshiping at the DEI altar and get back to core competencies, VZ is headed down the tubes.
