Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

If on PTO during layoffs, what happens?

By coincidence, I’m on PTO and out of town all of next week. If I’m on the list, what should I anticipate? Will the discussion wait until my first day back or…?

They will do whatever is legally possible for them. And once they can, they won't let you spend 10 minutes back at work. They give you the bad news. Bad leaders or teams ghost you from that moment on. Good leaders and good colleagues help impacted individuals apply internally and connect them to their network.

I was on PTO and someone in my family was in a serious car accident the day before. Someone in the Cisco organization I was in had requested an urgent meeting so I got on thinking we had an urgent organization strategy that I needed to have input too (lol) so I hopped on from my hotel room with my family around doing other things. The Cisco leader (a long time co-worker) just read a script, told me my position no longer existed and I had no job responsibilities - someone would get back to me with more details. I had so much personal chaos happening at the time with my family accident I could hardly process what’d just happened. I got off the call, gave my wife a hug and then moved on. I had way more important things to deal - priorities much more important than Cisco. My family came through ok - after a chaotic few days - I accepted a role with a multi vendor, service centric partner and really enjoy my role here. I enjoy doing business with Cisco, but love working with countless other OEMs like Arista, Palo Alto, Dell, Pute, etc.. Not being bound to a single portfolio and actually doing what’s best for the customer is fantastic. My lesson - life is way more important than the Cisco machine (any machine). Your employer may tell you how incredible you are, how lucky you are to be right here, right now, changing the world at such a special place. But that’s only really true until you cost too much and a financial analyst identifies cost savings by letting you go. It’s a spreadsheet calculation. Focus on what’s truly important and believe there are other great places to spend your valuable time. Go on vacation and don’t give a rats $&@.

Who typically tells you that you’re laid off? Your boss or HR?

It was my manager and his manager on a WebEx when I got hit.

I got canned on pto- they just call you and tell you are done.
Its real simple.
They could not care if you were dead or alive.
Then you tell your family what just happened and you carry on for a day at WallyWorld.

General Rules:

  • PTO: they will try to contact you during for notification. Remember your mgrand/or HR have the right to contact you in case of emergency (this is one of them).
  • LOA(Leave of Absence, Maternity, medical, family, personal): Depends on local law, You maybe protected till LOA is done or even longer. But the fact your position was eliminated due to business shift will not change. For example, some countries require no lay-off within one year after you give birth a newborn.
  • Disability (short/long term): because it is paid by insurance, you will be notified after disability is over and you are cleared by your Doctor. But the fact your position was eliminated due to business shift will not change.

That is based on experience

They move on to the next person on the list. That's why I always take August off. Never been laid off.

Who typically tells you that you’re laid off? Your boss or HR? I have a meeting on 8/15 (day after earnings) that was scheduled by my boss’ boss earlier this week. Coincidence?

Everything is based off the date you’re notified. Your boss will move heaven and earth to talk to you in the day you’re supposed to be notified. If you’re in pro, I wouldn’t accept work calls just to mess them up

yes otherwise you can sue them for ruining your vacation
we had a guy who lost his father so the guy had some day offs for this
they waited for him to be back and ..gave him the bad news without any remorse of compassion
