There is no such thing as a forced rating. I don’t know why we have to answer this every day. Obviously we are not hiring very well,

@3xtx, no, they are NOT related. Totally separate processes done at different times for different reasons.

As a manager, my area was told by more senior managers that ours told us to mark at least one BE. Some of us refused, me, others... so far, no repercussions, but that certainly would have thrown the math off.. I offered up myself, but I am still there.. unless they sc--wed over someone else, fighting it in the trenches worked, but they DID tell people to mark people BE, and then in other cut news, HR is telling people that if let go due to BE, that it's not a RIF, also RTO layoffs, and they are saying it with a straight face too.

Off course it's a RIF.. they are hiding it behind so-called performence cuts, and doubling it with RTO cuts in stead of trying to fix RTO problem-childs, and improving poor performers.

Are people just trying to act like they’re stupid or do they really not understand this process? Rankings and Ratings are different, but related things.

Our hiring process must be really broken.

Nobody is displaced because of rankings. People are displaced because of performance. Forced Rankings have nothing to do with Performance. Honestly don’t understand why people have such confusion between the two…

There are no fixed ratings. Ignore the University of Phoenix hires here. They’ll never understand the managers who have explained the process so well.

@apf, you are correct EXCEPT rankings are simply a linear list and have nothing to do with any curves. And, at least for me, I've never been told I need to rate on a curve but I HAVE been told if I give someone an EE I need to give someone a BE.

Once more, more slowly…. there are forced rankings. Which are based upon the normal curve.. Employees are ranked in order of effectiveness. This has nothing to do with raises.

But this is not true of ratings, which are assigned after ranking. On a large team you’ll often have lower ranked employees getting better percentage raises than higher ranked employees.

Displacements however always are driven by forced Rankings.

Managers are told by their managers how many we need to rank as off-track which for my devision is 10%. The whole division, some groups are provided a number by their upper management team. For example I have to put 6 off-track. I may not have anyone I truly believe is off-track but I need to follow the rules so I don’t use my job. Also, it’s easier to select people off track now because we have to factor in the 1 week training classes and from what we can see most people haven’t been completely this in a timely matter.

I’ve been on many high performing teams where several of us were ranked identically and differed in terms of rating. Obviously this could not happen if there was something called “forced rankings”. There isn’t any such thing. It’s only people here using the wrong words and misunderstanding the process.

Forced Rankings are consistently the most misunderstood posts here.

Mid-Year is usually an On Track or Off-Track rating. If you are tagged as Off-Track, good odds that you are in that 10% that will result in a PIP in the coming months or an outright target on your forehead for a "Release for Cause" This process is all part of the 9 Box game that is played throughout the year by your trustworthy management teams.

I hate to say this, but if you're worried about this, it's time to get out. If you're not a top performer, you're on the chopping block.

10% - and all of our team members meet the RTO requirements. Past layoffs already resulted in laying off the weakest on our team. They were hard working - just the weakest on the team. Now another 10% will get ranked as not meeting expectations. But now we are putting at risk team members who we really can’t afford to lose.

There are no fixed ratings. There are forced rankings. Which are based on the Bell or Gaussian distribution… the Normal curve... But this is not true of ratings.
