Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Job market after layoff

I just got offered a job for a reporting analyst outside of wells fargo, with 5 days a week in the office, 70K salary and only 10 days of PTO. If you think you wish to get laid-off, think again!!

Friend of mine in her late 40s was let go in September 2023 and still hasn't found a new job. She has a ton of experience and is competent and has only gotten two interviews. It's incredibly bleak for white collar work in America right now.

It really depends on one’s situation. Many of us are close enough to retirement and have a lot of years with the company. I survived layoffs early this year but I’m now wishing I had gotten cut with nearly a year of severance and the ability to just go do something totally different. A few people I know that got laid off basically said it just moved up their plan to retire.

If I got laid off I’d take some time off and might not even bother looking for a new job in my field.

Yeah, most have no clue as to what the market is like right now. OP, I hope you find a better paying gig. Accept that one if you must, and continue looking. No shame in that.

@pip+1tdtpEmO The point is the market is not “hot” for the employee who wants to continue working. Is it possible to step up or lateral, yes. But you had better believe that for the 90% of applicants/opportunities it is a nearly take-what-you-can-get environment. Of course nothing is preventing anyone from accepting a position lesser than desired as a stop-gap until the situation changes and then taking a new position.

There was no salary discussion early on in the process?

Salary expectations are almost always discussed in the early stages of recruitment. Was this a startup company? I've never gotten to a job offer from an established company without having had some salary talks beforehand.

Try applying to Schwab. Wells Fargo is heaven compared to that dump.

job market is different now than a few years before covid.
I'm looking for PM positions and so are about 100+ in my area--get past 2nd interview and then beat out.......it's sometimes pretty rough to swallow but as trite as it sounds it's all gonna work out

I noticed the market shifting 1-2 years ago and actively kept track of job postings as they dwindled. I am young and nowhere close to retirement, however, I am ready to be laid off and go in a different path outside of tech and the corporate world. May work for the better, may not. Most definitely not a cakewalk to replace the salary from WF or tech industry.

Wellsfargo India ready to work for peanut butter jelly sandwich. How can you compete with them? 70k is good deal. I would take it.

Sounds like a WF job. Basically, HR woke up one day and figured out they were overpaying everybody. So lay them off, then offshore their jobs. And when offshoring the job doesn't work they will re shore the job.

A lot of the people who are wishing to get laid off are probably pretty close to retirement and have been here long enough that severance basically be a free year before they have to start dipping into their retirement and SS.

That’s a broad brush. Depends on your location, skills, etc.

Would 70k be a pay increase?

OP— no law says you have to accept! There’s a lot of hybrid positions—you might want to keep looking
