Most of us WANT to be laid off

It's funny working in an environment where most people really WANT to be laid off. Even funnier how we say: "I ain't leavin' till they PAY me to leave!"

We're all in different places in life and that's OK. I'd be really be happy taking the VTP and retiring. I would get 2 years pay, after that 2 year paid vacation I'd start taking my pension, my 401K and my social security. Retirement will be good.

I can't express enough when I took the VTP in 2020 I didn't have a plan but am so graeful I took the leap and just started swimming. I'm grateful for some of the people I met and memories made but I also couldn't have imagined back then, the amount of skilling up I would experience and being challenged in a good way since leaving the company.

Would love to be part of the decision making process or at least have suggestions be encouraged and considered. That’s the way it used to work, all employees were empowered and valued as assets, not expenses. Process improvements, suggestions were encouraged and taken seriously. The company was the total opposite of the current state.

We have been told over and over, if we don’t like it, to leave and employees are just human capital. In other-words sit down and shut up, do as you’re told. Only a narcissist would treat their employees that way. A real leader listens to their team and makes informed decisions.

Which management style was or is better?

  1. The current top down, toxic, micromanaged human capital, dictator style with DEI
  2. Empowered employees, valued, bottom up style with Merit

The results are conclusive which one is better but in today’s upside down world, there aren’t any consequences for leadership that caused the abysmal failures. The customers, stockholders and current and former employees are paying for it.

How about these comments/facts to reflect on AT&T, will it satisfy you?

  1. “Used” to be a Dow Jones Blue Chip
  2. Stock price less than half of high
  3. Reduced dividend payouts
  4. Eliminated management retirement healthcare
  5. Eliminating retiree healthcare subsidy
  6. Sold pension off to an insurance company, Athene
  7. Market Cap greatly reduced
  8. Continual layoffs over last few years
  9. Sold many assets
  10. M&A failures costing company billions
  11. After layoff notice, reduced on payroll time to 2 weeks
  12. Little to no opportunities for an advancement under DEI for certain groups
  13. Consolidation of employees to a few Hubs
  14. Relocation notifications..aka layoffs
  15. RTO for virtual for collaboration with people not in your org or family of skills
  16. Remodeling the exec’s building, floors in Dallas
  17. Spending massive amounts of money on execs perks like, corporate jets, pilots, chauffeurs, off-site resort meetings.
  18. Paying for expensive rentals and transportation to many sporting events, for execs.
  19. Top down micromanagement
  20. Employees are human capital and not valued, just a data point to be reduced at first opportunity.

On and On I could go but I think most can get the picture of what has happened.

Word of advice. Working at ATT does not prepare you for the job market outside. The longer you stay at ATT, the less competitive you will be. Meanwhile, if there are any open jobs, they’re being taken. Don’t stay at ATT for the short term outlook of a severance. Securing a good paying where you learn things other companies need for a couple of years is better than missing out on that opportunity for 6 months max severance.

Came across this forum in the results of a Google search for general information on the scope of the recent layoff notifications. The topics and comments here are of little value in that regard, the majority of which reflect more poorly on the individuals posting than on AT&T.

I waited and got mine!! $90k and I speak to people that are still there and they totally hate it and want to leave. Management wants Rainbows and Sunshine. Only sunshine is the stuff they are blowing out their mouths. Who wants to sell a $50 broadband circuit when they are selling 100gigs for almost $10k. That’s a heck of a lot more revenue than some shared circuit where they both count equally in managements eye. That is just insane and a strategy for disaster. They are grooming this to be sold off. They only want wireless business and will ahead the wireline once they get to their port count target. Mark my words.

Much is all a result of them taking away retirement benefits and their typical stupidity in not realizing that this would be the result.

If I still had those benefits like healthcare and the subsidy available to me right now, I'd leave on my own. But now I agree with the OP that they'll now need to pay me to leave. That payment would be as much of an equivalent of those benefits I can now get and they scr3wed people out of.

All employees would be better served if the C-suite personnel would make the tough decision to poll everyone to determine who wants to stay and who would prefer to leave the company. This would not only lift the morale, but employees would feel less threatened by all the uncertainty! Sure, it would be somewhat costly, but it's costly anyway T handles the head count reductions! Makes perfect sense and eases the burden managers!
