incongruent salaries - your experience

I found a couple jobs online in NYC where pay range is included. they both a lower than my current salary. what is your experience in making a move to a role that is officially capped lower than where you are before you get there? band 4, front office currently looking at GCOR (don't ask me why I want to move...)

I made a move like this. Was never told I was over the cap, until 2 years later when I asked about an increase and wsa told that I was already over the cap and over my then manager. Fortunately came in high, but inflation has eroded that away.

Also moved from a major metro to smaller market (for my wife's job), and costs here are lower than where we were. i was very fortunate they didn't reduce my comp. I think the manager at the time wanted to fill the role fast to not lose the headcount as am told that can be hard to get back.

Recruiter, HR and hiring manager will chat you up to hire you in and then flat-line you for the next thousand years saying you are "above the cap" for the role and location.

Been there, done that.

Learn from my costyl mistake. Don't do it.

Or negotiate WAAAAYYYY UP to make up for the years you plan to be there.

Oh, and they can cut your salary/bonus too, Happened to my B2 (yes, B2!!!!)c boss.

I experience the opposite. B4 roles that pay more than my current B3 role, also have direct reports who make more than me as their manager. There is no strategy or logic to it, have been lied to by multiple leaders and hr partners. The flu you are in matters the most. Good luck, you will never get a straight answer.

It would be best to talk to the recruiter upfront and see if there is room to further negotiate regarding the salary range. Some companies are open to it, and others are absolutely not. Also helps if you have a known reputation in the industry and/or connections within the company to which you are applying.
