Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Offshoring expedites Social Security program's demise

It's rich (no pun) how so many companies are offshoring hundreds of thousands of jobs.

Nevermind that WF would like all roles filled by workers in India, a country that is a major ally to Russia/Putin. (No danger there for security of banking; right?)

But those same workers also don't pay into U.S. Social Security system, the system everyone is worried about funding. So companies are actively contributing to Social Security's demise! Short-term thinking and blatant hypocrisy.

You can't make this 💩 up!

It's like experts saying you need to work until 70 y.o. to maximize your SS benefits (hint: not the real reason they want you to stave off your SS filing), but ageism is rampant starting at ~45 y.o. How do they expect us to stay employed until 70 y.o.?

My family has a Bed and Breakfast in the Virgin Islands. We had to petition the island for approval (St. Criox) before we were allowed to make the purchase. Outside of family - it is required the 85% of the employees are required to be island natives. The U.S. should have a stronger (90-95%) U.S. employee ratio for ANY and ALL companies doing business in the US.
Additionally, NO non-citizen or Foreign company should have a controlling interest in any real estate, company, or company doing business in our country.
Enough already!

"The government should pass laws of what percentage an American company workforce can be offshored. The cap should be at 20% or maybe even less."

I like this. Should Biden do this now? Should Trump if he were reelected? What penalties would you support?

We Americans should not have to sacrifice ourselves to help India's economy proser, that is not our job. India's job market is booming and the US job market is suffering. This is a classic case of economic imbalance. Let's be real, India is not helping our job market.

Sure, as if many Indians need to worry about losing their jobs. LOL LOL LOL. Indians don't need to worry about losing their jobs as much as we do here in the US.
GET REAL!

Any suggestions for how to fix this? I think we all agree we don't want foreign workers taking our jobs. What realistic approaches do you propose?

I asked the question about whether they pay SS taxes, and after some research it's clear they don't. So, yes, money is leaving the US, and no you should not be mad at them for "taking our jerbs" but at corporations for giving them our jobs.

@1lnk+1tjVjkSq, regardless of worker classification, all non-US citizens working for US companies will pay taxes in their country of tax residence. Taxations are according to where you physically work. Indians pay taxes to the Indian government.

Does a remote employee have to pay U.S. taxes? Remote foreign employees legally residing and working abroad do not have to pay U.S. taxes even though a U.S. company employs and pays them. Because foreign employees are tax residents in a foreign country, they are subject to local laws, and U.S. taxes do not apply.

"Are we sure they don't pay social security?"

Notice how you were downvoted to oblivion, but no one answered the question -- it's just a circlej--kof rage. If we're going to rage at the outsourcing of our jobs, we need to be sure of the facts. I tried to search for an answer and came up with squat.

That being said, at least there's not overt xenophobia in this thread. Foreign workers are taking jobs from us; corporations are giving them our jobs. Be angry at the right thing.

But those offshore workers are NOT adding to those collecting social security either. With longer living, a majority of those collecting social security will collect more than they paid into social security. If I retire at 65 I will have collected more than I paid in at age 74 and 2 months. The change that should be made is the the employer part paid to social security should be paid regardless of the workers location. SSA would be solvent quickly and some jobs wouldn't move. Easy fix that the party of big business would never allow.

Good point. Sure would be nice if the people making decisions would do the right thing.

OP brings up a valid point. Ageism is real and it's the one prejudice that's allowed and encouraged. To those of you that laugh at us, just wait. Your turn is coming.

Thank you. I never hear anyone bring this point up. Offshore do not contribute to US taxes or GDP.

Yep it has nothing to do with the aging population, people living longer, fewer children being born, and the artificially low interest rates of the bonds that the funds are required to invest in. Has nothing to do with no changes to the system in forever. Yep it’s failing because of offshoring jobs.
