Thread regarding Ford layoffs

For those of you who are dishonest, your time is up!

Wall Street journal article today: “ The Jiggle Is Up: Bosses Bust Workers Who Fake Computer Activity”.

Pretend you’re working from home, but doing home improvement? Is one of the most dishonest a professional employee can do. If you’re getting paid to do a job, then do it, or leave. It doesn’t matter if you like or dislike a company.

The men, those from India anyway, are for the most part also highly misogynistic. To them, women have no place to be decision makers in their culture. That also applies in the workplace. So, working on a team where one is in a lead position is very difficult as a woman. You are clearly treated as if your opinions, advice, or expertise doesn’t matter.

"White collar workers in low cost countries bring no technical knowledge or experience is what I’ve seen. "

for most, their innate ability is lacking as well
also some of their cultures lack integrity which is important in the hard sciences

White collar workers in low cost countries bring no technical knowledge or experience is what I’ve seen. Education is not equivalent either. Companies that think it’s just a quick buck to be saved by farming out knowledge based work will be in for a hurting.

Our ultimate goal is to keep a minimum amount of assembly inside the USA and offshore everything that can be done remotely. And that will last as long as the UAW labor costs more than tariffs and logistics. Although, I predict that the next president will sky rocket the tariffs and the UAW will respond by increasing their wages to be just beneath the cost to import. But that's how capitalism works.

We need to offshore ALL office work as soon as possible. Simply put, the lower costs of foreign workforce - white collar jobs - is insurmountable with USA white collar workers. This is inevitable. And it is not something we should be surprised about. If any of us ran a company we would be maximizing our profits by any means necessary. Just like the OEMs are.

Eh, those saying if you can WFH your job can be outsourced are overlooking multiple factors imo. Some I’ll say are business intelligence, product planning knowledge and/or intellectual property and company/department best practices. Can’t speak for Ford (work at another OEM) but any job where I’m at that touches those areas gets lots of training on info sharing, how the info is handled/shared/retained locally and we sure as heck don’t let folks across the pond know that info (per our bosses). And why? If that knowledge edge is lost then what uniqueness or product would you have to offer a customer? And if you let someone in a low cost country do the work do you think they’ll keep that info confidential? The turnover is high and loyalty is low. There is a value to this knowledge and its retention imo and if you’re in a position that requires valuable knowledge a smart management shouldn’t throw you to the curb imo. What Stellantis is doing will bite them in the a-s.

Management that doesn't know how to manage the company business focus all their energy on watching employees.

Eventually only physical labor jobs will survive AI. Lounging behind a computer all day is out. Even progressive colleges are beginning to teach this. Be versatile.

This is absolutely necessary.

Too many half timers taking advantage of the company good will.

Back to work, slackers!

The boss assigns a task to be done by a certain date.

A good boss only cares that the job gets done, not how or where the employee does it.

The only question is, do the assigned tasks get done? Just sitting at a rent-a-desk 9 hours a day doesn’t build trucks.

Funny how even when people return to the office. You sit in a cube on your pc in a WEBX. You can see who is in attendance. Done both before I retired. did not effect my work. I do fully agree there are times an engineer must be in the office (Launch / build / sign-off).
But to sit there an tell me it builds a team is BS.
Now watch now they will schedule meetings for you to come in and sit with zero input but someone justifying their job. A few years back during COIVD. The senior management stated work from home was productive that came right from the donkeys mouth (JF).
No matter what from of work any organization does you will have people who do things and some will not. As long as an employee delivers results I don't care if they work from the moon or can come in for the things I listed above.
Yes there are people who abuse the systems again that happens even in the office. All kinds of people were running their businesses from work. Especially landlords.
create an environment either home or in the office that delivers results. this come back to the management style. That is where to start.

Fully remote work will be outsourced at one time or another, it's just a matter of time. Unless you are LL5 and more likely 4 and above (in which you likely aren't fully remote anyway), it would be smart to have an exit plan in the next 3-5 years. These remote positions aren't sustainable at the NA pay rate and they will be among the 1st to go when either AI or cost cutting with an appetite for higher salary labor cuts come up again. Enjoy the situation while it lasts, because its very likely that it won't. If your job is completely done via keyboard I don't think there is even a question. Expert level developers and anyone above an LL6 might be the exception.
