What to do when your manager is an overhead?

It is known that most of the Cisco first line managers are overhead. Cisco should have let these useless managers go but instead the company continues to create positions and add them into the organization. What do you do if your manager can't comprehend what you do but only knows to give you a bunch of BS?

I’ve had a bunch of managers here…but every now and then you find a keeper. If you aren’t wanting to climb the ladder, do what you can to stay with the good one — and then move with them when they, inevitably, leave.

You said it "this can go on forever ". That's why, Leave.
Why would anyone want to work for someone who does not want to help them advance in career ?

It’s not quite as simple to leave if your manager doesn’t have the best of interest for your career! Easier said than implemented and the concern becomes part of the company culture that has catapulted Cisco thus far. How Cisco allowed that culture of first line managers (even 2nd or 3rd line) to become so self centric, toxic and domineering is mind boggling specially any HR cases raised just further supports the manager, not the employee. This can’t go on for ever….

What sort of a question is this ? If your manager is not working out for your career advancement (really their only job), leave. No point in complaining or asking on this forum

"It is known that most of the Cisco first line managers are overhead..." Says who? Those of you here in this board? You can put the statement such as "All Cisco first line managers I had were overhead.." then it is much more believable. I personally had line managers that were incredibly hands-on and did the work(including coding) with the team together. In addition, they grew EIC talents into outstanding performers, care about the team, etc. You can speak with your own experience but the opinion in this board is just a small portion of the overall.

All first line managers in Cisco have to be fired and make all reports roll up at Director level and make Directors to work. These Directors/Managers have no work. Cisco needs consolidation badly

Put up with the manger while working on your resume and looking for another job. Do not stay at Cisco. It is toxic and a threat to your health.
