Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Why do we almost never talk about the true cost of layoffs?

It’s not exactly healthy to be under the constant threat of losing livelihood, and having to adjust, move and change jobs on a regular basis, while never knowing if it will work out in the end. Worst part is the feeling of powerlessness - not being able to do anything about it. Next workplace is almost never better than the previous one. And before some of you tell me that it's life, well it’s not the one most of us want to live. It’s not normal or good to be perpetually in crises and not having the opportunities to secure healthy stability at least for some period, regardless of knowledge, skills, smarts or business sense. We are at the whims of greed, narratives and other forces we can’t possibly influence or control. Don’t know about you, but I’m sick, tired and mightily affected by the fact that no personal investment pays off. Even more sick, tired and affected by being treated as a one-dimensional budget item.

I’ll be real, what finally got me to stop caring about RIF or VSP was saving up enough to last me 6 months and then putting it in a money market. The money is safe and separate from my monthly expenses, other investments and emergency fund.

Its not great advice for immediate concerns but now I just don’t care about RIF or VSP knowing that I have money saved up so that I am not left high and dry. It has definitely helped my mental health.

I just do my job and do not go above and beyond unless it is something that will help me.

The real thing for RIF or VSP it is the bonuses that the excexutive will receive, nothing new.

The impending doom I have had to live in the last 10 years took a toll on me and others around me. Regardless of whether we put in 40 hours or 60 hours, perfect attendance, never calling out sick, late hours, getting home at 11pm or 1am due to change controls before you could remote in to the network, and in single moment to get that call with your manager and HR to be told you position has been eliminated.

Think about this for a moment....T-Mobile has 67k worth of employees...we have 105k and they are simply kicking our a-s. If that does not spark you to look for a new role somewhere else, then roll the dice.

They are going to outsource as much as possible to HCL and other places including Mexico, yes Mexico, to reduce their cost. This is the common denominator across all businesses due to the rising operating costs.

And....if you look at the top tier folks...where are they from? That should tell you the direction.

Their will be life after VZ....you just need to step out of your comfort zone and make that change, its get harder as you get older, since a lot of company's look at that unfortunately. Start looking now if you did not take the VSP....because a RIF is imminent... along with more re-badging.

Agree. The sense of impending doom every day really takes a toll on an individual and their families. When I see employees who have had 10 different jobs in only 12 years it gives me pause. GCO call today where it was strongly implied there will be RIFFs once the dust settles. If i had to guess, March 2025.
I’m glad to be getting away from this mind-F*&c company and regain a sense of sanity.
Never felt like the GCO/BGCO has given even one iota of concern to the employees.

The christmas story popped into my head as example of what would be real life for most of it then there is that layer of fantasy that everyone just expects real life to be it seems when the owner/employer gives a damn.

All you can really do is not be in crisis all the time for something you can’t control and know is going to happen so live life outside of work. Always be preparing for the next role and sorry VZ but don’t burn your heart and soul into VZ because you know it doesn’t matter.
