Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Outsourcing coming

How long before the tide turns and we start outsourcing employees? Remember 2019? Bidding will begin, and Tech M, Accenture, or Amdocs will bid and pay T up front for work and millions thereafter. Employees will be sold as cattle and later slushed. Welcome to Corporate America.

This is the cycle, at least in IT (currently ATS):
1 - we don't have enough people for the projects, hire contractors
2 - we have systems we don't want our employees taking care of, hire contractors
3 - oh no! we've lost control of the knowledge and the cost is too high, fire contractors
4 - we must keep knowledge in house, fire more contractors
5 - we have to keep expense down, don't hire employees and ask them to do more
6 - why can't we get anything done? Go back to 1

I've seen this cycle at least 3 or 4 times over the past 25 years. This is nothing new. AT&T loves to repeat history.

This depends on what union folks you are referring to. Those in call centers have been going down for YEARS! Have you noticed the LONG hold times in most call centers?

The number of layoffs in the union workforce is minimal even with the outsourcing of construction work. We have always used contractors for cable burying.

But remember outsourcing is cheap to T, although they pay the contracting company, they have no benefits to cover, 401k, etc.

They will be replacing contractors and onshore employees with cheap labour in India. Did you see how fast is number of T employees in India growing? Sommers is leading this change. So despite massive layoffs you don’t see T employees number to go down. Deceptive.

“Union jobs cannot be outsourced! We're hands-on employees and need to be here to physically handle T systems! ”

Tell that to the union folks who work in technical centers, call centers, retail stores, etc. theres a whole empty wing in my building where they used to sit.

"Union jobs cannot be outsourced! We're hands-on employees and need to be here to physically handle T systems! We're here to stay and T wants to keep us. That's what we're constantly being told! Is it the truth, who knows with this company anymore!"

But you were outsourced. Not a single union member handled the fiber installation in my area. Everyone I know across different states saw 3rd party contractor trucks and uniformed workers installing fiber. You were outsourced. Better find out what your roadmap mission is here because the future jobs were handled by someone else.

Legg's first mission when we were graced with his ineptitude, was to eliminate 3 contractors and hire one employee. We were told this on a Town Hall several times and then were being approached by the AVP level to implement it. We were told to keep that incredibly quiet to not upset the current Tech M contractors, but they were within months of being let go. Our team regarded it as a major consideration for the roadmap until May of 2023 when the rto and move announcement broke.

So, for those keeping track:
Announced in 2022:
Eliminate 3 Contractors
Hire back in 1 employee off the job market, with approval.

When RTO came into the picture, Legg did a full about-face, wanting to just dump employees. Contractors suddenly became untouchable. I suspect that after the employee / RTO churn is done, a massive contractor upheaval will occur. Or maybe not. Contractors right now are completely protected, because the managers that manage them can be easily swapped out. Once going, Tech M can handle the front line work pretty well and leadership knows that. The enhancement work is where leadership is fine with a slow down or full halt.

Hyper-capitalism has no allegiance to nation sovereignty. Thus, these treasonous ongoings are certainly not “American”. The latter which inherently supports work/job for Americans.

Well, sound like a Perfect match - T & Wipro

“ Citi bank at one point used Wipro as well and dumped them because the customer feedback was horrible”

Wipro was mentioned during yesterday Town Hall. They are the cheapest vendor available in India and it shows. Citi bank at one point used Wipro as well and dumped them because the customer feedback was horrible.

Within ATS the flavor of the day is offshoring not outsourcing.

Job goes to India. But with employees rather than contractors. They retain control. But still have lower costs.
Result is the same. Poor work output.

This is not how outsourcing works. It is not Accenture etc who pays AT&T. It is the other way around. AT&T management humors itself into thinking that paying them to do the work is cheaper than paying for in house payroll.
And they also humor themselves into thinking that quality and customer satisfaction doesn’t take a hit with outsourcing.

It is already here. T has been outsourcing for a long time now.
