Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

More Than 20 Makes You a Target

More than 20 tech years of service. Always meets or exceeds. 2 gold coins and many awards. Now my new Indian manager thinks I need to go. Said I sould retire. Total toxicity.

Gone are the days of recognition for contribution. It's more about tring to stay off the 'X' and remain. The bank will not survive in this mode.

Next will be criticism of everything you do or have done, even years old decisions that may not have been yours. If that doesn’t work, they will criticize what was not done. And everything you did to hold systems together. With your experience you will be able to defend yourself well. But you will be on the defensive every day. It will wear you down and affect your home life and health. Be assured, they do not care. It will take time to find a new job, but there are companies that appreciate experience. I was in the same situation. Found a new job and left. I did not even realize just how bad it was until I started working somewhere else. Get your resume out there. Talk to recruiters. Talk with former coworkers, former managers, vendor contacts. The job market is not good, lots of fake jobs advertised, but there are companies looking for real experience. And you will find one. This is sad because you and I know what an amazing and great company this was and what it could be now.

What concerns me about Shart's obsession with getting rid of long time employees is that these people have learned what NOT to do and what won't work. As a senior citizen and manager I get approached frequently with new employees who are presenting their latest good idea. I'm not insulting them or their intelligence, I was once one of them, but if I had to guess, the ratio on these ideas would be around: 50% horrible idea that would result in negative outcomes or simply not work. 15% window dressing that wouldn't bring any meaningful benefit or be worth the effort. 15% in the pie in the sky / never going to get approved category, either due to budget restraints or HR/legal saying it's intolerable. 10% already been tried / failed in the past. 10% good ideas, some of which may be the kind of thing we can do right now, and some falls into the longer term 'hope we can do it in the future' realm. What concerns me is that without the filter of the experienced employees being around, we're going to see a ton of horrible ideas implemented simply because, collectively, we wont know any better. So, never having learned the lesson in the past, we'll go ahead and hit our thumb with a hammer only to realize, whaddya know, that hurts and isn't a good plan. Experience has value. Some olds are road blocks to progress, clearly, and good managers can weed those out if they are allowed to do so, but just throwing them all out is a monumental mistake.

I am sorry to read this. You don't deserve to be treated like that.

@1hkd+1u1hModa ditto him. However, I wouldn't file a "complaint" with HR. Just a letter detailing what happened. It depends if you are 'quietly quitting' or not. Document and try to get a recording of the conversations. The I team probably isn't trained/aware of age discrimination.
You can use that to your advantage. First, find a lawyer. They can tell you how to handle the situation with HR. They will tell you to act like nothing has happened. ... but document/record etc. Also how to compose trap emails.

Your manager must have skipped taking the required Develop You training. The one where they say "your top is hot".....that's all I remembered. That's probably all your manager remembered also.

immediately file a complaint with ER for age discrimination. quote your manager in detail. follow up with emails to the assigned ER/HR person. document everything.

25 years for me. My bosses upper management said he could fill my position with someone from the pool of people in my department but only if they are from India.

Sounds like a nice settlement for you!

Get a lawyer ASAP.

Why can't this happen to me?

Contact a lawyer. If they used the term “retire” they are engaged in age discrimination.

If this is real, I’d get a consult with an attorney and start evidence gathering for a lawsuit.
