LOA and LR

I have an upcoming medical LOA. What happens if I’m LRd during that time?

I used to work on the ER team and specifically tracked the LOA cases for each LR. 4 of us (1 was the rep from the disability comp company) met every Thursday and went person by person to discuss their circumstances and what, if any, extra care should be taken when they return from LOA. If you are on any LOA (medical, parental, etc) you will NOT be notified until you return. While I was on the team, the standard practice was to add an extra 15 or 30 days to the transition period once they return and are notified. If you are notified while still on LOA, you absolutely need to open a case with ER. I have seen some unique cases in which additional allowances were made. For example, a person on parental leave who was here on a J-1 VISA. Once laid off, they have a certain number of days to leave the country after their exit date. He had a newborn and was stressed about moving with his wife still recovering and how he would pack up his home and move across the world. He was given an extra 6 months of parental leave. I saw another case in which an employee was out on LOA b/c his teenage child had sadly unalived themself. His entire team was eliminated by the LR. His LOA was extended until the ER/HR team could find a role that was a good fit for him to come back to and he ended up being out on LOA for 9ish months until that role was found. We can all be mad at Cisco right now, but let's not spread misinformation about how LR'ed employees are treated while on LOA. There is a team that cares for that group with white gloves.

If you’re in the US, FMLA applies with job guarantee. It’s all on the benefits page under LOA’s.

Fran takes a pint of blood per day during your LOA.

In the LOA docs that you signed and should've read, it clearly states that your return to Cisco post LOA is NOT guaranteed. So, if you start the LOA before the LR you get up to 2 years to wait out the carnage and hopefully build the skills needed to be rehired.

Don't let your mgr get a hold of you before you start the LOA.

check your state's/country's laws and read the Cisco LOA docs. no one here can give you an accurate answer.

negotiate your LR as an LOA w/ full medical benefits where you stay effectively _employed_ for a year. This is why VPs generally get.

If you start the LOA before they notify, then they have to wait until you come back. Otherwise your LOA becomes an LR.
