RTO and surgery

Is there something in Workday I can mark if recovering from a foot surgery for a week? I can work from home but I can't drive for 7 days post op. My manager is new to WF and doesn't know how to help with rto stuff. I don't want to take PTO since it's not necessary.

Had this happen to a direct report. My Director communicated the riot act to me. Said the employee should have gotten an accommodation for a week. I see others say that’s not possible but I’d start with that and get the HR note as backup and then get in writing approval from mgr and preferably two up. FYI this was in Powell’s org.

  • this is not a formal accommodation. Those are only for things that are chronic (expected to last more than six months), not transitory like surgery.
  • manager has discretion to approve anything up to 30 days. This needs to be documented in workday. The way you do it is first to send your manager an email with the request, and then you open a “check in” in workday and document the request which then goes to your boss and becomes part of your record. Some business areas don’t empower direct manger to make the decision but the manager would kick it up the chain and then communicate approval or decline. You will still show up as noncompliant on the office reporting but you are “excused” from that and it is documented in Workday
  • anything over 30 days and up to six months can be done by manager in Workday by setting status to “remote”. These are reviewed/approved at OC +1 level.

I had ankle surgery and could drive for about 2 weeks. Due to being a concern for less than 30 days, HR accomadation does not exist. I worked with my manager and their manager to approve waive of in office requirement while I recovered. It is manager discretion, so try appealing to their empathy. Otherwise.... If you haven't had to take any bereavement yet this year it'll be unlikely they will ask for a death certificate and it's up to two weeks OOO.

The solution to save you headaches is to take 3 days of 4hr PTO to count as 3 in-office days. I don't care what the 1up or 2up manager says. The system that tallies your in and out days isn't going to know your manager approved or didn't approve something via email. In 4 months, your 1up and 2up will have forgotten and when you remind them, they will say it's no big deal. The powers that be that assign your ratings are likely above them and don't want to be bothered with chasing down who approved what and when. Are those 12 hours of PTO worth it to avoid hassle later on? Yep.

If you decide to apply for an HR accommodation, do it as far ahead of time as possible. They are slow, slow, slow. If you wait until the week before your procedure, they won't even get back to you until after you've already recovered.

Take 3 half days each week for two weeks and you can work remote for the 2 weeks.

In our LOB, if it was only a week, they would just note it. It'll take too long and too much work to go through HR for just a week

Yes, go 2 up and you should be able to have them just put a comment in workday. I did that about 6 months ago with a herniated disk. A director can approve up to 6 weeks of wfh.

You will for sure qualify for a medical accommodation for this, you can request it through the link on Teamworks. They will give you approval to work from home. Just make sure your doctor is willing to write a note. (I got this approved for a similar surgery.)

Will you only need one week? You should be able to get short term disability for a few weeks to recover (although you would have to use a week of pto first). As part of that process, they will ask if you need any type or accommodation. Also even without short term, you can fill out an accommodation form (may not be worth it for a week). With swelling and stuff I would do that and ask to work for home a few weeks. I am sure your doctor will help fill out paperwork.

Talk with your manager. There’s nothing in workday to flag it since HR response will be “ that’s what pto is for.” If ok with your manager wfh this week & then work full 5 days in office next week. It’s a rolling calculation so it will keep you off the report.

managers do have some discretion to allow for temporary WFH. You'll still flag on the reports but should still be OK. There isn't any system to allow this, just email them and maybe your 2up as well asking if it is ok for you to work remote for two weeks and if they say yes, that's your approval. Given the reporting is based on a rolling 4 weeks you could also come into the office 5 days per week for a couple weeks either before and after and likely still be fine from a reporting standpoint. you could also take half days for 3 days the week you can't drive and that will count.

it's time for your new manager to earn the paycheck they are collecting and put on thier big girl/boy pants and figure it out for thier employee.

No. Go to 2up. Every line of business can do things differently. Call HR.
