EFFICIENCY LAYOFF - WHO DECIDES

Who actually decides who to pick for layoff.
I am talking of performance/efficiency layoff now.

Most of the folks I know that are layoff are senior level guys , some managers making the highest money. Not surprising they are also the older guys.

One of the laid off guy told me- his manger told him the decision to lay him off did not come from him or his manager.

My own theory is that for each group HR will have a list of those shortlisted for layoff based on some HR criteria. Then the manager (assume the manager is not been layoff himself) will now choose one person from that list

I am not sure how they choose who gets to go and who gets to stay. My location got let go we had very strong mixed team inexperienced and experienced. My boss and boss’s boss were let go also. It had nothing to do with performance as they kept other locations teams with low performance and brought in another department to take over our position that we had to train .

Oh they most definitely can give an Exceeds rating. But that would require them to go to bat for the team member and have robust rationale/evidence to support the rating.

Unfortunately many just won’t do that.

If your manager is able to blatantly lie and say he wanted to give you an exceeds but he can’t he will have no problem saying the decision to lay you off did not come from him.
In my team the layoff affected the two people that were less liked by the boss and his buddies. They even have a separate chat in teams where they gossip about the rest of the team. How toxic is that

FInance comes up with a target number $ to cut. A query of employee costs is run. Results of people on the possible ki-l list are sent to HR. Su-kup and politicos are removed from the list. Individuals in protected worker classes are struck from the list as well per HR and legal. Has the target dollar amount been met if yes stop the process and plan for the terminations. If no widen the scope and repeat the process. First and second level managers have zero to do with the choosing they are just given a $ amount that is the tribute for the round. They usually find out the day of the culling who is cut and who remains then heavy breathe on the termination day and not permitted to speak. After the round is complete gauge morale if it su-ks the plan is working. Next phase continue to destroy morale so employees terminate themselves and celebrate the saving since zero severance payout in self elimination rounds

Yes, people never ever admit to being the decision maker on this. The execs are nothing but no good liars.

It's a world of guessing. Have you known a manager to lay someone off and say it was completely his/her decision? EVERY time a manager spoke to out team on who got layed off and who made the decision it was always "someone else" who made the decsion. A real "not me" situation. This is one of those times we just have to believe what we want to believe, because the truth gets masked.

Executives are given a task by finance to solve. If it’s 1M that means 5 people are likely to get cut. I don’t know why people think senior execs get involved with picking us peons to lay off.

There are SO..ooo many layers of management at WF it is hard to know precisely. And every manager is good at pointing the finger at another and lying to your face.

My manager said he didn't know. I've heard that he had the deciding vote. That's not surprising. So he was untruthful.

This is such a good question. I’m sure it varies a bit for literally every decision. I do remember a DM in branch banking once telling me he had choose which personal banker to layoff from one of his branch locations.

It's roughly 2-3 down from the CEO. That's where my group's decisions are coming from.

Maybe it’s redundancy?
