What's the best way to ask for a raise?

I feel (not certain) I am at the bottom of the range and I feel that my contribution is exceptional.

Is there a way to ask for a better comp without pi----g off the manager?

My opinion would be to apply at another company. If THEN they offer you more, DON'T do it!, they are just buying time to deal with a disloyal servant.

unless for retention purposes you will not get an off cycle increase. Now that we are getting into the year end performance cycle, you can have a conversation with your manager and let them know your concerns as well as make a case for why you deserve more. End of the day, when it comes to meric increases departments are given 2-3% and need to divide that across everyone including promotions. If you are truly underpaid compared to others in the same role your manager will see that and will hopefully give you a little extra, but that extra may be 3-5% instead of 2-3%. If you're thinking 10%+ then that would need to come from an hr evaluation effecting more than just you or you getting promoted.

For many departments, merit increase requests from management are not getting approved and are generally blocked by HR until next year. My understanding is that every position will have MRP reviewed and adjusted next year (even merit increase for promotions are currently on hold). The only “workaround” is presenting an offer from another company and if your manager is willing, they may request a salary renegotiation on your behalf on the basis of employee retention. Merit increases for retention are treated entirely different and have an expedited turnaround.

This is the only method I am aware of with any success regarding a merit increase, however, if you decide to go down this route, consider the risks. You must be confident your manager will request and justify a salary renegotiation (they may want to review your offer), if you accept the new salary you still indicated an intent to leave, we do not know what will follow the MRP adjustments being made next year, and this information being posted here might change the retention process.
