How common are faked qualifications overseas?

One of my international coworkers confided in me that they only completed one year of a college degree even though our job requires at least a Master's. They're competent enough for what we're asking them to do but it was still shocking to hear. How common is this?

Very common.
Those with ‘degrees’ cone from unknown places and hired by equally inept EGS managers. Lastly they keep exchanging their first and last names to avoid leaks of their past history.

The majority of the Indians offshore are 98% incompetent, don't care, or both. They only want to job hop until they get to a level they consider successful, and that isn't a secret. The stateside Indians are slightly better, only because they have to be. I suppose we should take a lesson from them and not give a d*mn about the job and only do the bare minimum and lie about what you are actually doing.
I've known so many people who do almost NOTHING who continually get praised and promoted. Do like the execs do, right?
This company is total cr-p. Waiting for my package so I can get out and move on.

very few at WF require a Masters. Be more concerned with if they can do the work and communicate well.

Our team manager posted on LI that he was a director. When he was still just a team member, his LI profile showed that he was a manager.

What should be concerning is they pass interviews and then aren’t PIP’d or let go when they are incompetent

I have a question. Do any of you bring these concerns to upper management? Do you feel safe to do this? Can you work with them to define what "efficiency" is?

I knew a Paksistani American in one of the major Banks in NYC who told me that anyone can buy fake certificates, fake birth certificates and even fake passports in Pakistan for money. He was funny but very interesting. I would guess that most countries around that area and middle east would probably have fake certificates. It is better to TRUST BUT VERIFY PROPERLY unless WF is ok with one year degree for the job the person is doing and is probably paid very less compared to a headcount here in US.

Very common! Both tech teams offshore that I work with require a senior person to help them do their work. The company thinks they are getting a bargain but half the work is being done.

This is a not a joke. I worked with a couple guys offshore who for close to 2 years produced nothing, whenever something was needed they asked for 2 dozen meetings, they basically wore you down so you just stopped asking because it would require 100 hours to get 4 hours of work out of them. Nothing and i mean nothing was produced by them and they were not fired. One of these guys said he was Director on his linkedin and was in charge of the entire project and coordinated the entire project .. guess what though he landed at another large bank with a Director role, he was like ground level and went to Director. Like he 100% lied with impunity and it paid off for him.

Look up the resume of an India-based person who you've worked with that left WF. Look up what they say they did at WF and contrast it with what you know they did. That will answer @OP question.

There's dozens of articles I read about fake credentials and degrees in India. There are literally companies which are paid to answer phones and claim the person on their list for whom USA HR is calling for confirmation they have a degree, but it's completely a lie. A five minute Google search can give you many articles about this

One of the next major employment scandals, not limited to the financial services industry. Consider: the hiring manager in the US is a foreign national here on a work visa. They are also a senior manager, if not the sole department manager. They were appointed to that role by upper management to accommodate and accelerate offshoring, and seem to have connections in their home country. Recruitment and HR functions have also been offshored to their country. Line managers in the US are not allowed to review resumes nor interview candidates prior to hiring them anymore. New offshore hires are simply assigned to the onshore team by the hiring manager. Lastly, the hiring manager sends an email out to the team welcoming the new hire and highlighting their qualifications, which could be entirely made up.

This is all intentional; the point is to hide the H1/offshore hiring process from any onshore oversight and due diligence. And to make it difficult for the onshore line manager to push back...

The one year degree is probably the equivalent of a free online LinkedIn course. Very typical of the scam culture which is part of their national identity. The pack approach means they can get by on very basic knowledge and then leverage their enormous cohort of other scammers to look good enough to pass a smell test (bad pun, they usually don’t an actual one). Companies fall for the lower cost of labor and ignore that actual labor cost is higher due low competency and the 3:1 ratio Or higher for skilled native workers with an actual degree. Once they get to a certain critical mass they only hire their own and prefer lesser and deferential staff, usually family members with zero skills. They know all of this to be true, trust me.

Maybe about as prevalent as it is in the US? We once hired a person years ago that said they had expert excel skills and VB, etc. they couldn't even write a simple sum formula or know how to copy and paste.
