Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Selling my soul for the RSUs?

will I sell my soul for $… obviously.

I was like this myself, until recently. This company is just so outright hostile to its employees. I've been starting to wonder, does this company deserve me?

Now I'm not saying I'm the best broadcom employee, or I was the best vmware employee. BUT I do my job fine, don't get complaints, do all my work and even help others on my team. I'm a decent employee that always does the work and managers don't have to worry about.

So why does this company treat me like they want me to quit? Why do they treat all of us so poorly? Although a better question is, why do I stay with a company that treats me so poorly? I wouldn't keep someone as a friend that was this cr*ppy to me. I wouldn't stay married to someone that valued me so little.

I can't believe I'm nearing a point where I say "the money isn't worth it". My whole family has taught from the start: The company pays you, so you do what they pay you to do. You take care of your family by working a job, and it doesn't matter how bad that job is- you work it. It's an all volunteer army, right?

But here I am, actually considering leaving. The work really has changed, and it really has changed for the worse, and people really are unhappy, and so am I.

I've been granted $36k in RSUs so far. Over half my wife's salary. Can I really walk away from that, just because I hate the job? She says yes, but she also wants new windows for the house, a trip to Europe next year, the car is 10 years old, etc.

I just wish Hock wasn't so actively hostile to employees. I treat my company with respect. I don't steal from them, I don't lie to them, I get all my work done plus a bit more. But I suppose you can't convince an abuser to stop abusing you.

It's an injustice that BC took my wonderful company and gutted it. But anyone who cares made bank doing so. And us leftovers...we have only ourselves to blame for participating? Are we really supposed to bail water, when it's them that put the holes in the boat?

We know what is happening. This company is treating employees poorly to force them to quit. They have taken away benefits, increased the workload, and substituted money for dignity and respect. I know it, they know it, you dear reader know it too.

So why is it so hard to move on?

The world
has never looked so dark.
The pain has never felt so bad.
So it is wrong,
to try and hold on,
When it's all we ever had?

@2kk1 Hope you're not an engineer that bad at math... 2100 shares at today's avg $420 a share = $882,000 US dollars. The equity will always beat the severance here.

@2ggg I wish I could go back just for the RSU I was given 210 shares going from vmware to broadcom then a 10 - 1 split so 2100 shares like 400k over 4yrs. I did survive for like 2yrs well.1. Something. I wasn't laid off but moved to a Partner, but sure missing those RSUs right now....

Job market is tough out there for software positions. I would suggest staying put until you find a better position. If it's mean spirited boss or colleagues bothering you, just ignore them. They are almost always present in every company. Collect your RSU and do you job. If you are let go, at least you'll get a nice package.

Indeed, only Hock knows. Everyone else is just pretending.

Don't leave. Kick those dogs in the nuts. No one knows what is going on. No even 4 levels up in your mgmt chain. So, just ignore the horse manure around you and take care of yourself.

We are all selling our souls for compensation, regardless of where we work. Not sure what the point of the OP is.

Ya. You need to decide and not leave your wife hanging. If you decide to stay, put a firewall between your work and your family, and not discuss. Divorce can be expensive

If the work makes you unhappy leave, life is too short to suffer for anything monetary. Most of us have 2-300 months to live, absolutely no point. Happiest folks I know are not those chasing the big money anyway.

If your feelings toward your job affect your relationships at home, then leave.
Otherwise, try to set yourself a money goal when you feel comfortable to leave and then look for a job when it makes sense in that time line.

For many people, life is just too short to spend your days working for such a soulless company. I used my professional network to land a contract gig working for an ex-VMW leader now at another well known high-tech company. I volunteered for severance from BC, and was approved for a package. I walked out the door with 32 weeks of base salary, took a week off, then started my contract gig where I’m netting about $5k/week after taxes. The RSU’s are nice, but BC is not the only place to earn a decent living. Good luck!

You get paid - to do a job. Did you not get paid for the job you did? Then move on. If you did get paid and got RSU's, wtf are you complaining about? Just leave if it's a problem for you.

"Stop complaining and do your job. If not happy find another job. If you are dead, company will hire another worker within no time”

Not this company. They won’t be hiring.

Just say no and sit back and do minimum work to collect checks. In the end you’ll be ahead of those that took a package and those skimpy RSU’s will add up

36k over 4 years or even 1 year I won’t even get up for it. You might think about it if it is 150k a year.( big maybe) . , knowing this rsu thing is not promised. It is just a carrot to keep you invested while they can fire you anytime.

Think of the company that would make you the most “happy”

Then ask HR legal what their role is at the company.

Answer?

To protect the company from the scúm employees.

This is WORK, not your hobby.

Grow up already.

Stop complaining and do your job. If not happy find another job. If you are dead, company will hire another worker within no time. Never love your company. Do only required work, not less not more. Don’t check emails or take calls after office hours and during weekend.

If you choose to live in the swamp then get used to the stink. Software engineers are like prooostiituutes. They keep saying they need to work for one more year and then they will give up this profession.

They make it clear that everyone is just a number to them. Honestly they would probably prefer that you leave so they wouldn't have to give you a severance as they look to continue to cut.

I was in a similar situation and decided to leave for another opportunity. Is any job perfect? no, but I am much happier in my decision looking back 7 months later.

Lotus blooms in a swamp of excreta. God sometimes tests you by throwing you in a swamp. All is not lost. Survive and thrive. This shall pass too. The west is doomed. Learn to cherish the good.
