How many managers here are being instructed to stack rank your team and choose to do it out of fear of losing your job?

Yep it happens
Yes, we all do it. Then we have these marathon sessions ranking against each other's teams. Your actual review score depends on how well your manager documents your performance all year and how well they can demean others. Its sad and disgusting behavior.
Thought we “hired the best”, right ?
Why would we then force this planned results on our hard working rank and file ?
Official policy is very different than the actual practice. We have been told every year not to refer to it as forced ranking but let’s call it “calibration”. Yeah… I remember all those years that “eight was great” too.
All companies do some form of stacked ranking. It's been going on for years.
A bell curve has the same effect if the intention is to put some in as inconsistently meets.
Just moved to another LOB but the last one said do NOT do stacked ranking. But one should plan on a bell curve in general. You don’t need stacked ranking for over half your staff as they are clear meets usually. Manage much?
