Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

I'm still 100% remote, why?

My LOB is states away and quite a few of us are 100% remote all over the country. Maybe next year we all get fired?

I work in an area where probably 70 percent of about 100 people are remote. We've been subject to layoffs for years now, letting go 10-15 a year, then restructuring. Only a handful however have been let go because they are remote. The majority of the layoffs were because some middle/upper manager who will be gone in 2 years needed to let people go to get a bigger bonus

The majority of people being displaced are NOT remote. They have been, and will continue to be, an easy target with a built in (fake) justification, but the in office people are, and will continue to be, downsized as well. Shart is eliminating the domestic work force. It's long term, but eventually he wants us out of retail and mortgage as well. Once that's done, 90% of the headcount can be overseas. The other 10% will essentially be sales and execs and roles that are required by law to be domestic. That's the plan people, prepare accordingly. Personally I'm close to retirement so I'll wait for my severance, but if you're young, head for the exits as soon as you can land a good job elsewhere. There's no future in this place regardless of your location.

ALL remotes will be eliminated. It’s only how long it will take. It could be a few months, or another two years. But the org will look at positions, workflows and compare to # of remotes. Then decide if there is acceptable risk to separate with no existing backfill or wait around until there is a body there to take the load.

The crux is that the load may be taken on by an direct replacement FTE, a contractor or a role shift/reorg. It’s not a 1:1 answer.

I have worked remotely for over 20 years. I was given notice in July to move or be displaced. Moving is not an option for my family, so I chose displacement. I am still working, but will be displaced soon (likely tomorrow, so I have been told).

Remote jobs are not safe. Your number will eventually be called.

The top brass has repeated a tag line every quarterly town hall that "our department was granted a special exemption and will continue 100% remote, no return to office" etc. etc. for the past 2 years. Meanwhile in the past 6 months they've been hiring new folks ONLY in 2-3 hub locations and required to do in-office training, etc. with our hub managers working in office as well. The number of new hires is suspiciously similar to the amount of non-hub people in our department that are still remote and spread randomly around the country. While they may not officially do return to office for every department, it's pretty clear that what they eventually plan to do is eliminate your job if you're 100% remote.

If you aren’t near a hub/specialty location there is nowhere to RTO to. And contrary to what you have heard, there is no guarantee you will be laid off either.
