Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

How do I get myself on the next layoff list?

I'm not asking how to get fired, that would be easy. I want out but I also want to get severance. Talking to my manager is out of the question. He wouldn't be helpful, to say the least. Is there anything else I can do to improve my chances of being cut in the next round, whenever it happens?

200K Pension with 30 years would be around how much? Someone mentioned $5400.00 a month and if not eligible for Social Security or they want to wait until 65 or 67 for Soc Security who could live on that?

There is no possible calculation that gives you a $5400/mo pension check with only around 200k today's cash value. Of course, IDK what post you saw that 'estimation,' but it's not even close to accurate. If you have a cash value of around 250k right now, stop working on 11/1/2024 and then wait another 10 years to start payments, your 250k would then be just shy of 400k, and your monthly would be less than 3k/mo with no spousal option.

To the other part, though. If you stop working and your house is either paid off or nearly so, and you have at least one car paid off, you should be able to do just fine. If your house isn't paid off or you have a long time left on it, and multiple car payments, student loans, and you live large, no, you're not going to be able to survive. You don't stop working if you still owe tons of loans, mortgages, and other bills.

Of course, you haven't even considered 401k balances. Most people have far more in that than in their pension. Those can get you a couple more grand a month in RMD income. And if you were fortunate enough to create a decent dividend yielding brokerage account, that can bring in a bit more without having to actually sell any of those holdings.

Move to a non-hub state.

“ This is hilarious because we can barely get data for things that are easy to track let alone 6 months of historical LAN or WiFi pings for 10s of thousands of employees.”

I don’t disagree, but I know they are tracking this for a fact. Incase you haven’t realized, they care about the RTO report more than anything else.

If you can't level with your boss then just start implying and leaving hints you are going. For example, talk about it to others on your team known to have big mouths or be close to said boss.

If one comes along he'll pick you since he figures he'll lose you anyway.

But understand that no goodies will come your way in the meantime like top ratings. Based on what you say about the relationship maybe that's already not in play.

but if we’re taking about someone making 200k

Well, if we're talking about someone who makes 200k I don't feel sorry for them. Most L2s in the SE make less than 150k, even after 30 years of service. Someone at 200k should have a HUGE 401k and a he-l of a pension if they've worked for any amount of time with the co. And you're making that much and haven't been here long enough to have been part of the pensions, well then, take your pick of curses and know they don't come with any sympathies.

“ IMHO, management surplus isn't really enough to play a factor in when I stay or go; it's not like it's 90 or 100 weeks.“

I mean, good for you but if we’re taking about someone making 200k , half of that is a still a lot of dough; especially given that “stage of life” with kids in college maybe, etc. Too much for me to leave on the table anyway.

Sounds like you already have a poor relationship with your immediate Boss? That’s the single most important factor really.

"They know some offices don’t have a “swipe out” and have been tracking your time connected to LAN or WiFi with network pings to your laptop and COU every hour or so. They have at least 6 months history of this data already. If you do this regularly you should expect a letter soon. "

This is hilarious because we can barely get data for things that are easy to track let alone 6 months of historical LAN or WiFi pings for 10s of thousands of employees.

Also the policy doesn't specify time in office. Until that changes they aren't doing anything to the coffee badgers. I stay the full 8 hours 3 days a week but know tons of people who don't and haven't for well over a year.

Do bare minimum, stay quiet on calls, mail it in, send all your work to others. Oh wait, that’s how you get promoted.

Um, I guess just work really hard. Seems all the hard working valuable folks get whacked. Totally mind job I know, but sure seems to be the case.

Be over 40. Live in a state outside of Georgia or Texas. have more than 10 years in as an employee. Be useful in some capacity. All of these things will eventually get you surplussed.

Real estate installed facial recognition software in the lobby and exit security cameras. Not only do they know who is coffee badging, they know who’s cavorting.

I just asked the HR business partner. I didn’t ask my manager either. It came as a surprise. You could also ask your manager’s manager. I was asked to move to Dallas so i was going to get severance anyway. I don’t know if you’re in Dallas wanting an out. You don’t deserve severance in that case. Just leave.
