Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

I believe the whole RTO mandate will fall apart soon

There is no increased collaboration and socialization, but there will be marked decline in productivity and results. We all know the true reason behind the RTO has always been the attrition, as well as some minor considerations such as locally arranged tax breaks. Vast majority of folks will not quit regardless of how bad the RTO is, including long commutes, bad conditions at offices and the clueless mgmt, because of the current state of tech job market and the state of the economy. So it’s a failed strategy on all accounts.

"Which 'follow the trend' does our infamous leader choose?"

I vote we model ourselves after Hu----r Magazine with Friday parties like those in Wolf of Wall Street

Lease roll on my lap top is next year. If they go to 5 days I move to a desk top computer. If I can't work outside the office, no need to carry a work computer around with me.

Problem is, they did away with a lot of dedicated assigned seating. Where you gonna leave that desktop?

"RTO is being pushed across many industries due to Blackrock, State Street and Vanguard having controlling interest in the vast number of US companies. Heavily invested in commercial estate, the Unholy Trinity needs people to prop up their commercial property values. Once their commercial properties are converted to apartments, RTO will be a distant memory."

makes no sense. why would you prop something up with something like RTO and then let RTO drift after you've achieved whatever it is you are hoping to achieve in real estate values? if you make money and value on something, you won't let it drift into distant memory, you grip harder. RTO is multi purposed, not hinged on improving property values. RTO is here to stay bub. only way it will drift into your distant memory fantasyland is when you dump Stankey and anyone that agrees with him.

5 day RTO has been approved in the board meeting and all heads are putting together reports to do the same shortly. January 1 2025 is the unofficial date for go live. Sad state, but Amazon ruined it for us all.

“Also productivity as he measures it being on LAN and sending emails or in teams meetings is way down on Fridays and he plans to go 5 days a week in 2025.”
The RTO diehards on this board don’t like it when actual metrics measuring work are referenced.

Stankey is firm believer in the stick, not carrot. Amazon goes full on 5 days a week. Microsoft decides to continue with it hybrid/WFH policy. Which 'follow the trend' does our infamous leader choose?

Funny how culture survey results not shared and first time in like a decade those annual employee satisfaction surveys weren't thrust upon us

He is truly the most reviled CEO this company has ever endured

5 days a week is where it’s going. Confirmed for us today. Official mandate will take a minute but it’s coming per the previous poster’s comment about the board meeting.

"Swipe, go home. Repeat x 5. No issue just a morning wake up, coffee, go swipe then back home."
This will affect your bonus next year. You need to expect this.

Actually gonna get worse. They are pulling all kinds of reports that show 1/3 of employees that come into office don’t even stay 2 hours and stankey shared that at a meeting. Also productivity as he measures it being on LAN and sending emails or in teams meetings is way down on Fridays and he plans to go 5 days a week in 2025. He covered the Board and got their support last week. Any officers that don’t like it get exited if they push back at all and they were told get in line or get out, that came from a very high level officers Chief of Staff.

Stop dreaming. They never admit their failures. They still proclaim that the WarnerMedia & DTV deals were a good thing and delivered exactly what we needed. $100B lost. Yeah, nice job.

This is why it won’t be falling apart ANY TIME soon. Likely will go to 5 days. Just wait.

attrition is the only reason for RTO

if tax breaks are related to butts in chairs in the office, leadership would have mandated contractors be in the office 5 days a week.

same for collaboration

it is and has always been about crushing employee's spirit in hopes they quit, so they can save on severance and replace with offshore or cheaper college hires in dallas or atlanta

Since Amazon is leading the way by forciing 5 days a week on their employees - I could see Stankey doing the same. They like the small increases in the stock price and Wall Street loves the cost reductions!

No one in leadership is worried with your concerns as per the 1,000+ times they've asserted it in their Town Halls, emails, and trickle down messaging since June 2023. Anyone that hasn't moved on, will be laid off through traditional surplus methods. Their method has been quite effective for remaining survivors. ATT has avoided layoff spotlight through their numerous waves to discourage employment and aren't spooking shareholders. At least not the d-mb ones. The mere fact that you posted this, means you aren't in the loop on their plans and therefore outside of their area of concern. The plan cannot be undone. Stankey has burnt the ships by integrating it into policy.

If they gave us dedicated space with our teams like it was for full time officer workers before Covid it wouldn’t be bad.

This setup right now is a complete disaster and it’s miserable for most people. Fighting for parking. Fighting for desks. People sitting on the floor. People working in break rooms. It’s a nightmare. I don’t know any of these people and my team scatters wherever they can trying to find a place to sit.

Stink doesn’t care though he gets off on this

Just because it's a failed strategy from a productivity standpoint doesn't mean anything is going to change. There are plenty of arguments publicly available that point to commercial real estate investments as the true driver of RTO mandates.
