Unemployment Insurance for NY after VSP

Got my severance deposited today. Just wondering - are we eligible to file for unemployment in NYC? I also got an email from Verizon saying they participate in UI.

I know for a fact that 2 people who applied in TX got denied last week. Both got follow up calls and were asked if they were specifically told by managers that their role will cease to exist , and if so, they wanted names and proof. So unless you really had a situation where you were told that your role is going away and that’s why you took the VSP, it’s going to be a tough sell.

When I was RIF the state of Texas gave me full unemployment checks every Tuesday like clock work. In fact they even extended my benefits. By the way it was 20 years ago and received by pension and rolled it over to an IRA to avoid taxes. Good luck good folks hope you will do fine.

@1jzb+1uPdL3Ji, you can not delay collecting your severance.

In New York you can collect it because Verizon will not contest it but you won’t be eligible to receive your first unemployment check until your severance runs out. When you file for unemployment, they will ask if you are receiving a severance. Just follow the instructions they give you. Apply for unemployment as soon as possible.

In New York it is actually better to file for unemployment first, and then delay collecting your severance for 30 days. If you receive your severance 30 days after your initial claim, you can collect both.

You can try but you’ll probably get denied after they review further

Yes you are but only if you took the VSP because they told you that your role was going away.
