Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

No opportunity for upward mobility

As part of any group outside of India that is shrinking in headcount you will find there are no longer opportunities for that next promotion. Much less opportunity as each year passes. Impacts everyone even hipos and made even worse by new trend to bring in outside talent for high CL roles rather than university hired and grow internal talent.

Upward mobility??? You are lucky to just keep your job when you get 45+
You must be early career and naive.
On the flip side, you maybe lucky to find a sponsor and become a hipo.
The rule of thumb is, for early career engineers, if you don't know you are a hipo then you are not a hipo.

The worst part is the sponsors aren’t even sitting in the ranking meeting so how do they know that their hipos performance deserves outstanding ranking when it is supposed to be relative and they didn’t listen to any of the discussion!

The EM internal HiPo system is geared towards producing PowerPoint experts that are shielded from the real world and protected from all assessments.

Any Supervisor that criticizes a HiPo is destroyed for doing so.

Stop giving HiPos immunity and give them real world challenges instead of just short term exposure to business lines.

The trend of bringing outside talent for high cl roles is self inflicted. When you have a job to fill, you will invariably go with someone who is experienced and has expertise in that particular area, rather than someone internally, who has spent that time changing assignments every 2-3 years.
