Verizon has second big outage in as many weeks — here’s what we know
Thu, October 10, 2024

Nearly a week after Verizon experienced a massive outage that caused many of its customers to be without service for almost an entire day, reports began trickling in indicating that another outage occurred today.

User reports on Downdetector showed a massive outage spike at around 1:00 p.m. ET, affecting users located in New York City, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago, and many more. There was about 1,538 reports as of 12:44 p.m. ET, with a Verizon spokesperson confirming that they received over 6,800 reports today. Over on X (formerly Twitter), many users were reporting outages with their phones once again going into SOS mode. Meanwhile, users on Threads report that outages with Verizon were happening across Florida due to Hurricane Milton.

In total the outage started picking up steam around 6 a.m. ET before peaking at noon. Reports began tapering down around 3:30 p.m. ET.

Verizon confirmed that customers in Minnesota and Nebraska were experiencing service issues. Later they amended that claim to include the "Great Plains region", which includes the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and part of Missouri. Though we saw and received reports from people across the country including New York, Seattle, Chicago and Wichita.

A long time ago, a past Verizon CFO posed the question if forgoing a premium network with lower revenue was a better business model. VZ could continue to leverage its network reputation in the near term, but see it dwindle over time. More of the T-Mobile model. It appears this is coming true.
