Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Dropping my AT&T Insurance coverage

My wife's employer is finally providing coverage. Their family plan for 18 employees saves us 28% on monthly premiums. More items are covered at 100%, max out of pocket is slightly lower, prescription meds AND diagnostic labs are 100%, and no copays. Televisits are not covered because they offer no medical benefit. Dental and vision are very similar to what AT&T provides. Her current doctor is covered, mine is not, but I can live with that. Estimated savings to us based on our most recent 3 years is $7100/yr.

AT&T insurance is laughable at best. Smaller companies offering better and cheaper insurance. AT&T profits off of their insurance. AT&T "says" its costs X-X but in reality its substantially cheaper and our "cost" literally covers it and then some. Then AT&T takes the write off on the inflated costs they "claim".

Medical insurance is one of T’s largest expenses given the age demographic of employees. T’s employee base skews much higher than most other firms.

Tax breaks should be taken back from these corporations and greedy CEO’s when they can even provide affordable health insurance for their employees. The healthcare at T is embarrassing compared to other large corporations.

I got the subsidized insurance when i retired in 2021. Gold Family at that time was $900 per month. Next year went to 1200 month. Then this year they wanted $1900 a month. Changed to the high deductible this year for myself which is only $130 month which includes dental which isn't bad. To add my wife and child it goes up $660 extra a month...WTF? My wife has a part time job at a great company that everyone uses and she only pays $220 per month with child. The deductible is $1000 less than mine for two people. Might have to go on the wife's part time Family insurance plan next year and only keep the dental just to keep it active. What a scam!

Remember, at&t, like most large corporations, actually 'self insures'. BC/BS is the administrator of the plan, but T basically guides the plan. It's genius actually, BC/BS is the customer service/interface, and they get all the shellacking and ire for the "cr-ppy" plan complaints, but T laughs all the way to the bank... I'm on the pre-Medicare age 'retiree' plan and relatively healthy and single/no dependants so it seems okay for me for the price...At least so far. LOL.

I am actually paying less than I was last year as management in monthly premiums. We were prepared to pay what we did last year, as it was pretty good coverage, IMO. They didn't even offer that option for 2024, so had to opt for as much as we could get.

why shouldn't it be bad? Is anything with the T name on it good anymore?
The only real thing worse than the plan is the company, alight, that administers it.

I make money on our insurance. The money that the company contributes to my HSA far exceeds my spending. My HSA account is growing larger every year. Works good for me.

AT&T Benefits are top notch. However, the premiums and HSA employer contributions are based on how long you have been with the company. In our case, we do not pay much out of pocket for the insurance; however, the high deductible plan changed this year. Traditionally there was an out of pocket deductible max per person but that part was removed this year and now it's a family max. If you are looking for employee only coverage, there should not be a charge with any company.

I have been on my spouses medical for years now. Also HDHP- but significantly lower monthly premiums and deductibles. Way better prescription coverage. My child is at their first job out of college and her medical insurance benefit is so far superior to anything we offer, it's a joke.

And by the way, it's not that our insurance benefit is complete garbage per se...it's that they then have to tell us that it's "industry leading", "best in class" and all of that nonsense. And IT IS complete nonsense. Getting to where employees are better off declining and just going onto the marketplace (ACA).

It is poor quality coverage, but for those within 10 years of retirement you can offset some of the loss by maximizing your HSA contributions which carry over into retirement. Every little bit helps.

Pediatrician called ours a Ghetto Plan. Great for those who seldom use it, horrible for those who need it frequently.

It is embarrassing how much we pay out of pocket for healthcare and even services our company sells.

Neighbor's son has a policy that covers parents not yet eligible for Medicare. Very progressive approach.

Our son completed his MBA with 3 offers he considers to be serious. He has interned with all of them and thinks each would be a good fit for his initial 5 year plan. We were shocked by the benefits packages being offered. He then showed us 2 others he was not interested in. The medical benefits from all 5 surpass what I have with AT&T. One of his peers showed us the packages offered by 4 other companies. We are the welfare recipients of the business world.
