Some managers have left for greener pastures. Others seem to have distanced themselves bracing for when they have to lay people off. That's business and all good and well. In any case where an employee and their manager may both be scheduled off on post Tuesday payday, if an employee is laid off, would they just come back to work the following day to no system access, and find out their job is no more?

This is true! When the managers for my department were displaced last year, I was actually on PTO and they called me at home to tell me. when I returned to work the next day, I was answering to a new LOB and manager.
The manager’s manager will call both of them on the day (irrespective of whether it is a day off) to displace them.
