Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AT&T Work Life

I have worked at T for 40+ years. I never remember waking up in the morning and saying, "God I don't want to go to work". Now I am nearing retirement and dreading it. I will miss T. I met my wife and raised my kids while here. Never missed a paycheck. Are layoffs stressful; yes. But honestly it needed to be done. I can't point to anything that isn't getting done from a shareholder viewpoint. I do think the layoffs could occur more gently, but overall T is better off.

A lot of employees have been working since 17 years old for att. 57 is not too old to work and it has nothing to do with finances. Most people retire at 65

I stayed wacked out for 1/2 of my career and then I was promoted. I used them for financial gain. Came out ok. At that level you don't have many professional friends.

OMG!! Dude! Why are you still taking up a seat? 40 years? You must stink at money management. It’s time to move along! Nobody there respects or cares about your knowledge and experience. I’ll be happy to help you pack up and load your car.

T is the McDonald’s of tech.
Do you ask McDonald’s employees if they like their companies culture?

In the community of developers and tech workers T is a laughing stock, most mismanaged company.

Shawshank redemption, institutionalized or Stockholm Syndrome for the company sycophants.

We have a lady in North Carolina that has 50 years with Bellsouth/T. When asked why she doesn't retire she says "I don't have anything else to do" SMH

It’s hard to have culture when your employee base is so demoralized that they are completely divested from the company.

Most of the L2, L3 people I know just treat the job like a paycheck now. They hold no T stock, only go to the office because they’re told to, and have no real “faith” in the company or current vision.

The actions of upper management is why the company has no culture.

Contraire my friend. No one thrives in old age. Some get along better than others depending on the physicality of their career. You can't out hike old age.

I've been around a while now too & what's been funny about this place is waaay back when, there used to actually be a "culture" and somehow the company still made a lot of money. Once the SBC folks took the reigns, they homogenized everything while progressively making a little worse each year. The frog boiling metaphor is way overused, but it really does apply to how things have gone as "AT&T".

So now when they talk about "culture" IDK what they're talking about - they have some made-up idea that the company is how they portray it in their commercials - "fun, but serious and hard-working", where the culture is really everyone looking out for themselves hoping they're not the next head on the chopping block while wondering what benefit the company is going to shrink/take away next year.

" His health will diminish with age when he slows down. Doctor appointments will become more frequent because it's their job to find health problems and they will. His brain will get mushy and he will become forgetful thinking dementia is setting in."

This is def true for some. But I wouldn't paint everyone with the same broad brush. Some people remain very active and thrive in retirement. This is my plan, and I am looking forward to it. Work a little side job doing something. Spending a lot of time outdoors, hiking, etc. You don't have to just sit home and stare at the wall.

I don't know why he would even consider retirement. Got it made after 30 years, coasting after 40. Retirement will be hard compared to doing nothing at work. His health will diminish with age when he slows down. Doctor appointments will become more frequent because it's their job to find health problems and they will. His brain will get mushy and he will become forgetful thinking dementia is setting in. Stay working, at least you will feel like your contributing although your peers are wondering when your old bad of bones is leaving. Heck, I have 50 years and nobody knows I'm there.

I think I met your wife here too.

Seriously though. What does your family have to do with your job? The correct answer is nothing.

I experienced all of those milestones while employed here too. One has nothing to do with the other. Work is work. Work is not, and never will be, family. Don't ever get confused on that.

Who thinks up these ridiculous posts?? Better off? If T wanted to reduce headcount, all they need to do is offer a package,Ike they used to. You would have volunteers instead of laying off people that want and need to work. Everyone would be happy, like the old days when you felt the company cares about us. Now all they seem to care about is their own greed.

Dude, you wouldn’t believe how many T employees woke up in the morning and think “God I don’t want to go to work” because of the toxic environment that Stankey and his minions created. But we go to work cause the only thing that makes us to do it is $$$. We are not productive, we have no skills. This is majority of T workforce.

Fake Post? There are quite a few 40+ people at T. And T is not a bad place to work relative to a lot of others

I retired.

I don't miss the Stink and his mental illnesses.
I don't miss Toxic-T and the BS.
I don't miss having to fight traffic to go into a building with no toilet paper.
I don't miss the id--tic strike duty training that taught you nothing.
I don't miss each HR system being replaced every year or so for something even worse.
I don't miss having to work all night and getting no sleep.
I don't miss the conf calls that go on for hours and get nothing done.
I don't miss the witch hunts to assign blame so someone can be fired.
I don't miss the mismanagement making the wrong decisions because they don't know anything.
I don't miss going on trip and being limited to $25/day to eat while the Stink can take the corp jet to get his head polished, go to the Olympics, or some golf tournament.

Nice fake post. There aren’t that many 40 yr people here anymore. If your a tech with 40 yrs, your not waking up every day loving it unless you work in Air pressure maybe. Telling people to retire is not going to save your job from layoffs. AI and fiber are going to eventually take jobs away. Just stop the cr-p. It’s not funny and it’s not helping.
