Who decides?

Who decides who gets laid off when a team needs to make cuts?

My direct Manager was told by his boss that I was selected for job elimination 2 weeks prior to my separation date. It’s about money and a number they need to meet. Also, about favoritism and a leader who chose to solidify his site over another.

No. It comes down to your performance and your RTO compliance.

Both are excellent metrics for layoffs and firing. It’s great when employees are the bad guys as there are no legitimate complaints.

Most of the time, it's about the dollar figure. Managers or directors that have any say, do often try to keep or find new homes for people they like (if they can), but the dollar signs usually make the bulk of the decision. Kind of sad, but it is what it is. BNY is not the only company doing it, they're just really proficient at it!

I think it depends. I lost two people as a complete surprise. I did not pick nor did my manager. We were told the People Team was very involved in the choices but I don’t know if that’s true.

I spoke to my senior director several months after my layoff. He told me that the decision was his. His L3 came to him with a dollar figure and told him to cut whatever was necessary to make that number. I was expensive and had a historically high bonus. Thus, I was cut.

Was unfortunately part of “Digital”. It’s the wild Wild West where it’s an open secret: if you were not hired by the Lady who’d rather run an Irish pub,( but still run it to the ground), or her cronies then you got fired. It’s a step by step process: more visibility to the “hires” she blessed, the others -set up for failure. Decision usually is by a manager involved, no matter what they say. Glad to be out of that swamp.

I was laid off in January and I was told by my director that they fought to keep me. Im not sure that was the case. Maybe it’s decided even higher than that level???
