Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Nobody is your friend

I made a mistake and told a guy on my team I considered a friend that I was looking for a new job and that I wouldn't mind being laid off. The next day my manager knew about it. I guess my "friend" wanted to score some points for himself by telling him. You can just imagine how well that went for me. Don't make the same id--tic mistake I made.

Did you get canned or just written up? I've told my manager, my manager's manager, their manager, and their manager all that I can't wait for this to be over with so I can get on with my life. So far no displacement, unfortunately.

No friends allowed at WF. Now your manager will have to report you to HR for having a "friend" at WF.

hard lesson learned... NEVER trust anyone at work, no matter how close of a friend you think they are. (unless you were friends before working together, but even then i'd advise caution).
sceptical? yes... but necessary this day and age

I would have told your manager you had a personal and confidential conversation with a colleague. That person broke your trust. The conversation was misconstrued and not open for discussion. As for the colleague who broke your trust, they had a substantial certainty to steal your trust and spread false information to third parties. Next steps, if the manager would like to discuss your concerns about work in a constructive manner, you can meet with them at your next scheduled 1x1 when you are prepared to have such conversations. You can also point to your commitment to work and demonstrated performance. Explain you are no longer comfortable with the colleague who broke your trust and wants to ensure this does not happen again. Their actions were negligent

People will do anything to save their own jobs. It’s funny though that this person really thinks he can save himself that way. He’ll still probably be laid off.

Not true. We should all have a best friend at work. Gallup told me this is necessary

Sad but true about 'friends' at work. You absolutely cannot trust that they will not divulge information that you feel you are sharing in confidence. I had to relearn this the hard way time and time again, wanting to believe that coworkers I felt so close to were trustworthy.

In the end I turned this to my advantage, informing 'friends' that I was never going to retire. I knew this would get back to my manager, and their manager, and help push the displacement card. It did seem to work.

I agree. Having friends isn't ever worth it..Now some at work call me a friend, but I have to correct them and say, no we are only acquaintances. Having friends just makes your life harder. You have to remember their name. What they told you yesterday. Invite them to your birthday. I'm 62 and I have no friends. Sad? He-l no. I have my family. Family aren't friends....they are FAMILY. Thats all you need in life, is family and 2.64M in the bank to retire on and treat your family with great times and make memories. I have half of it...no money but a great family.

Sorry to hear OP. A quote I once heard - People at work are friendly but they are not your friends.

My grandma went through a lot in her life and used to tell grandkids: “there are no friends, just acquaintances.”

Never share anything you don't intend to become public knowledge. Sorry this happened to you.

Yep. I too was just betrayed by a work friend. CS has created a Hunger Games environment where even the closest friends will betray each other to survive.
