Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

What's out there for us older folks?

With so many folks in our later years facing layoffs these days, it seems like companies aren’t too keen on hiring any of us. I'm curious - what are some of you who are in the age group of 55+ doing to land new jobs? Are there any opportunities out there right now?

I'm 58. I got pushed out of BNY last year and just accepted a new job this week. It's for a law firm doing something similar to what I did at BNY. It pays 20% less, but it's adequate for me and the people seem very nice. Also, the company is stable. I just applied to jobs on LinkedIn that seemed like a good match. I probably applied to around 50 jobs and got interviews with around ten companies before getting an offer. Good luck to everyone!

@OP+1usVXW9C There are jobs out there. It might take a little longer. Be aggressive and don’t give up.

@uhl+1usVXW9C - you must another basement dweller. Maybe you’d stop being so bitter if mommy finally told you who daddy was. Now go play in the street until then

I feel the pain but it’s not all doomsday, network is networth..older folks have awesome network, leverage that, try upskilling ,move to teaching or coaching if that interests you, start a side gig etc..stay healthy and fit ,we are wise and won’t take BS, and we are in this together..

Obviously it will take longer to find a job if you’re older, however it’s not a lost battle.
I know several colleagues from previous employment places that found jobs in their 60s. Depends largely of your skill set, charisma and how well are you prepared for the interview.

What disappoints me are the increasing number of fake job postings. It’s exhausting to apply for a job only to find out is a fishing expedition.

@idw - I think they're implying that we should all sell our paid off mansions and take the gains to move back into starter homes or idk maybe they're thinking more like a tiny houses?

Ya know, the mansions that our BNY salaries have obviously afforded us over the years.

For the person who makes it sound so simple to ‘downsize’ from the current home. I have to ask you - downsize to what? And where? If I sold my house what would I buy? Dont suggest renting bc that will cost more than my mortgage payment.

yeah opportunities for 60+ are just not there. when they realize your oldest work experience (year) they can back into a ballpark of your age and the interview follow up is usually a no thank you. I am just hoping to get through the next 5 yrs....but you never know i am in a high cost location so i do not have high hopes.

@uhl. don’t let there be more division among us. It’s not good for anyone. We all should be in this together, not against each other. Just as easy to point out multi generational perceived weaknesses to your generation. But we should all try and help each other, not tear each other down. We are not enemies, we are not the ones making the tough decisions.

@uhl is the typical know-it-all kid who picks and chooses the things that make is life so much more difficult than older generations. She's likely never heard of:

  • The draft
  • Mandatory military service.
  • civil defense drills
  • 18% mortgage rates
  • 18% car loans
  • fuel rationing
  • cars that only lasted 80k miles
  • muffler shops
  • jumper cables
  • spare tires
  • 1 bathroom homes
  • homes without AC
  • homes without garages
  • storm windows
  • long distance bills
  • party lines
  • phones tied to the wall
  • $5k computers (in 1980 dollars)
  • $1k microwaves (in 1980 dollars)
  • $500 airline tickets (in 1980 dollars)
  • 26 inch TVs that weigh as much as a refrigerator
  • etc, etc, etc

@uhl - Are you deranged?

What a world we'd be living in if everyone's life took the same perfect path that you seem to think is realistic. I'm happy that your family has never been impacted by divorce, death, illness, elder care, job loss, etc. You're very lucky to be so entitled. I'm a millennial and I know my parents checked all these boxes so I really have a hard time understanding your arrogance.

@uhl I hope you, your parents and your kids all lose your jobs. Just because you millennials THINK the older generation had it easy doesn’t mean it was. Nobody was living lavishly off of 2.00-4.00 an hour no matter what you want your twisted mind to believe. There were still the same bills to pay - car, phone, house, electric, water, groceries etc. So in your mind (I’ll base it off 3.00 an hour) 120.00 a week was enough to pay all these bills and live the good life? Lol - give me a break. Go back to your mommy and daddy’s basement and keep mooching off of them like I’m sure you have been your whole life.

I’m going to be honest with ya, if your 55+ that means you were born atleast late 60s and college mid 80s. You lived during a time when college was cheap enough to work a minimum wage job during it to afford it. Medium home 150k and could easily afford that on a one income medium income job in your 20s. Your kids got to be 30+ nowadays, what are your expenses? You lived life on easy mode compared to 25-35 years olds rn. if your not in a situation where your close to retirement or can sell your massive home(that only is you and your wife live in and have probably doubled your equity in the last few years) and downsize using the profit to get you to retirement, then you are a sc--w up your life on easy mode lol. You were laid off for a reason bud, hang it up. Get a part time job at Lowe’s like you deserve! All you olds (55+) have to realize your generation is the only one to “live the American dream”. Quit bi--hing and move on

My take- once I interview, they realize I am not 40…… and the opportunity is lost.

Fact of life.
