Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

56 and looking for a job

I'm constantly being lowballed to the point that it's becoming ridiculous. Is this due to the current state of the job market or is it an age thing? I'm getting more and more discouraged each day and my worry about being laid off has skyrocketed due to this.

58 here. Found a job. Only after learning python and AI. Outside Wells tech (where you have to do everything and know everything) the real world is more specialized. After a year the pay was the same. After 2 about 30% more. Was at Wells 8 years.

no question is age is a factor. i would say over 50=52 makes it harder.

It is a bad job market out there. Wells Fargo tends to pay higher salaries, external recruiters know this. They are able to find job seekers asking for less money, so it cheapens your value.

The market wages have reset from highs and you will have to either take the cut or will not get a job.

I was in cybersecurity prior to layoff. Been interviewing and they're low-balling even cyber jobs. Gotta wonder about the wisdom of cheaping out on security!

I'm a 63 year old woman in tech and it's rough out there. I have a desirable skillset so I'm getting interviews and hope to be able to land something soon.

The job market is terrible and salaries are lower. I applied for over 200 jobs while laid off and ended up having to take a 50% pay cut from WF.

Maybe it’s because I look young for my age but how would anyone know you’re 56? Haven’t you removed the dates from your resume? You don’t introduce yourself as “a 56 y/o consultant,” right? Soo, how?

Just look around all the banks are doing mass offshoring. What's left state side goes to H1B Visa holders. I'm not anti Indian at all, i'm a very open minded and liberal but when i go in the office and there's row after row of 1 race its hard to deny. This is the new corp america not just this bank. Your kids will be faced with far worse though.

job market is tough right now. I left WF earlier this year for a job outside of fin services, so it is possible. I have many friends still at WF and most are trying to leave. I am helping them with networking. I took a pay cut of about $30k, but glad to be out of the toxic environment that is WF. It can be done. I am working for a gov contractor, so pay and job stability fairly good.

In spite of all our b1tching, Wells actually pays quite well compared to many other companies. In the past when I've looked into other similar roles, the pay was lower or they'd have to kind of stretch to match my current salary.

2nd-- if you're older, I'd think it's harder anyway b/c they want younger people they can pay less and not likely to retire in the next few years.

The ball is in the employer’s court now. Payroll is one of the biggest expenses for most companies and a reset of wages is needed to keep them profitable. All expenses on the P&L are under a microscope right now, including payroll. Regardless of age, it’s tough in the job market for job seekers.

It is not your age. My son in his twenties is being paid less than I was for the same professional work I did at that age 30 years ago.

You could be 26 and looking for a job and you would encounter the same. There are few positions currently demanding solid salaries. Market saturation.

I'm 60 and.was laid off. It's awful out there. I hope 2025 is a bit better. Otherwise, I'll be forced to retire early.
