Is the real purpose of neighborhood seating is to make the layoff process more smooth by not having any personal items to pack up after they lay you off?

It is technically named Mr Charlie's Neighborhood. If you sit and stare, you will see the postman walk by, and your male colleagues all dressed in cardigans.
It’s nothing but a productivity gurus workspace idea. Minimize space usage while cutting cost. Less personal =more productivity. You are there to work not have a second home. The concept is not exclusive to Wells. Other firms been doing it for years (neighborhood, desk sharing, etc)
They implemented hood seating to jam more people into a smaller space. They know we are not there 5x a week so why reserve the space. Also, you are supposed to collaborate but you have no idea who is around you day to day UNLESS YOU HAVE ASSIGNED SEATING. It feels more like a sweat shop now.
It's the way low-wage call centers are organized and factory farms. You are cattle.
Its purpose is to cram as many people as possible into the smallest possible space.
And to make it as easy as possible to reconfigure.
