AT&T fibbing about industry equivalent compensation

"Meta staff are given daily allowances of $20 for breakfast, $25 for lunch and another $25 for dinner — similar perks to what other large tech companies offer workers on top of their typical compensation packages"

I was assigned to work in Bothell, WA as the result of RTO. That region of the Puget Sound is home to Microsoft and Amazon, and has a fairly big Meta and Google presence. They wanted me to relocate there. The cost of homes and the general cost of living is astronomical. I couldn't even rent a studio for the price of my mortgage in a different state. I couldn't come close to making up the difference by selling my house (incidentally, had a very low interest mortgage). The property taxes were astronomical as well. And they wanted me to do this all on an AT&T salary. And due to the weird formula AT&T uses for determine salary ranges, no changes would result in my compensation by the move. Take my word for it... an AT&T salary (L2) does not even come close to what those other companies are paying. I decided not to relocate and as a result am no longer with the company. Best decision ever.

Tech companies don’t offer work / life balance. Thats why they comp you to eat at their campus. More time working and less time elsewhere. There’s no benefit to an employee here.

Truth is a lot of these companies are colluding to suppress wages. It is illegal, but they use 3rd parties to get around it. Thats why most jobs have generic job descriptions and titles anymore and salary ranges haven’t budged in years. Keeps employees from jumping ship as much and keeps the wages down for everyone. Been going on for a while.

That CLEC era was pretty tough especially when the government said we had to provide them service levels at or above our own or be penalized. Believe some went into business just to get that money. Get 2 customers to place orders and if there were issues with one we were only providing 50% service levels to them. Got so bad they were provided priority dispatch.

Good point and looking like Stankey is moving us back to those roots.

Not really a defense, but the Feds have been both a thorn and a buoy. Anytime we tried to break out too much, we got slapped with being forced to run the lines for CLECs while also providing all of it at a steep discount. We have universally been "obligated" to provide services for pennies on the dollar, and sometimes paying them. Then they quash the mergers that make sense, leaving C-Suite to dream up ill-advised sh-t for "growth."

“We aren't a tech company; we're a utility.”

We digressed to the tune of 170 billion in debt trying to be this huge media conglomerate.

Good point and looking like Stankey is moving us back to those roots. Copper is being replaced by fiber where feasible and the old dial tone is now a wireless signal. I find it interesting that some believe we should come up with the next IPhone or warp drive technology. Yes there are pockets where innovation is needed but decent growth and a safe solid dividend seems to be our fate. The old widows and orphans stock play.

We aren't a tech company; we're a utility. Though I'm betting our employees who are making 400k probably get way more perks than the average Joe, too. (Like someone making that much really needs that much in food allowances.)

Meta probably got dinged by auditors for disallowed expenses.

Comparing AT&T to Meta?

"Look at the other cellular and broadband companies"

Nothing at all unethical about a little loosely coordinated wage control among telecom peers

Doesn't seem practical when the country has a severe obesity epidemic.

Meta isn't a true comparison. Look at the other cellular and broadband companies.

It's not like we're in the top 50 of the Fortune 500 or anything...
