Surplus and Retention

Has anyone had a retention bonus and been surplussed a few months before maturity? Did you get a partial prorated payment?

Retention bonuses are typically prorated unless you were terminated for something like cobc which would disqualify you. If you received a retention you also at the time had to sign the terms and conditions of the retention agreement. You should have received a copy. If you don’t have a copy then contact your HRBP to request a copy.

Details should be in your retention bonus prospectus (available on Fidelity).

Retention bonuses should be prorated if you are surplussed but not if retired or fired for cause or resigned.

Regular bonuses are pro-rated if you are surplussed or retire.

Only L3+ get retention bonuses to my knowledge. Was a big one given this time last year of $30-50k to L3+. Probably what they are referring too.

“Getting fired and still wanting part of a bonus? You really can’t make some of these posts up!”

I don’t think this person knows what a retention bonus, or surplus is.

What an id--t. Anyway, in my view, retention bonuses are intended to get the employee to stay. If you stayed, you did your part of the bargain. You should get a pro-rated bonus to reflect that. But honestly, I have no experience about it since I haven't been in that situation. Good luck!

I got surplused, will get a prorated bonus, but I'd love some money I didn't earn. Att leadership does this. The fact that you don't, means that you are one of them white dudes for Kamala

Should be prorated. Hopefully someone can confirm who has been in this scenario.

What an id--tic comment. Why wouldn’t you want what money you’re owed?

Lets say retention bonus was 3 years with first payout at 2 year mark. You’re a month shy of the first payout. Why shouldn’t you get it prorated for getting laid off involuntarily after completing some of the terms?

If recollection serves, if involuntarily severed some of it will get paid out but one should check with their supervisor or HR or read the terms in the retention offer.

If someone made the choice to stay based largely on the retention bonus and was let go shortly before it matured, I think it is a reasonable ask to expect at least some prorated version,
