Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

SPE and Chief Engineers Please Guide Us

Have been at this company for over 12 years and over the past year my manager and his line manager are pulling me into meetings telling me im on "track" to become a Senior Principal Engineer in my next assignment. But before i can become an SPE, i have to go thru an assessment where im supposedly going to get grilled by the Chief and other SPE's before i can join their cult. Is this common practice ?? Seems a bit excessive to be honest.

Also what kind of compensation and perks do SPE's get, i get told that they are "executive" positions in the company and we are on par with Asset/Refinery Managers. And i get told Chiefs are senior executive positions on par with VP/SVP's of entire divisions. Does this hold any truth.

@1azx All the person did was ask a question.

Personally, I don’t think there’s much to engineering at Exxon. Anybody who is functionally literate can copy and edit tech specs for vendors. So give the OP a break. It’s not like you’re anything special either.

It is obvious the person who wrote this post is not in line for any SPE position.
Or is this how far the company has fallen? More toxic individuals who degrade these once respected positions out of envy.

It is not about the money or the position. The title is to recognize a lifetime of good work and the ability to move the company in a direction for the better. For some, the unexpected reward of a title comes with more responsibilities and stress. It can consume your life.

After you leave, few will remember your titles or even you at all. But some will remember the impact that you made.

On "getting grilled" by an SPE.... You are likely referring to the skill development assessment process, where SPEs validate that you are indeed a level 3 or 4 in said skill area. It's really not a bad of a process, if they are familiar with you and your skills, then it's fairly straightforward, if not there might be some followup questions. Ultimate CL for chief is 33/34 which is lower than VPs (36/38)... but still a good executive track to attain.

Now you have to consider that there are a lot less chief positions than VP roles. I'd also be worried if a lot of technical leadership role ultimately move to India over the next decade

Principal is equivalent to junior section head
Senior principal low level department head
Chief very low level tech manager

Why would you get grilled by other SPE/Chief on assignment......

Who is retiring / moving for you to become SPE, each dicipline has 1.....so what you are posting doesn't make any sense.

entire paragraph shows someone never worked in XOM / at least close to making even principal.
