Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

How can I fail upwards?

My boss has been with Wells Fargo for over 20 years, the biggest thing he is capable of managing is a bunch of teenagers working as baggers and cart pushers at a local grocery mart. I work with lead engineers who couldn't lead a dehydrated donkey to the closest watering hole and their technical skills clearly do not exist.

If these type of people did not have access to Google or Bing or even the team works website to search for popular keywords they would not be able to produce analyst level admin documentation at best. Everything that they do produce requires another engineer to circle back and clean up and fix and do right.

If I don't clean up after these other adults then I get blamed for not looking out for the team and my manager starts on his soapbox saying I'm an insider threat and that in the best interest of Wells Fargo he needs to do everything he can to fire me.

My question is how can I fail upwards like this? Where I don't have to take accountability for anything, I can blame everyone else, and I can be rude and disrespectful to everyone else and not be held accountable.

I fear though that I will not be able to fail upwards because I have a strong ethical backbone I actually feel guilty when I leave something unfinished and I have a strong professional ethic and I think it takes a special type of dirt bag to fail upwards; however, if there is a possibility for a morally ethical individual with a strong teamwork building factor to fail upwards please let me know.

Everybody is a part of the work culture- put your best foot forward and be open and visible on the choices and decisions you make and keep your skip level updated ..if you are doing above your level you will get noticed over time.

Can confirm. Merit-based promotions are nearly impossible. Don’t make yourself too valuable in your current role that they “cannot replace you”. It’s a doom cycle.

Leo’s been failing upward since the start of his employment. Same as TK. Ask yourself: How are they different from you?

Run and let them clean up the mess…after 401k match in December and bonus in February of course! You are too close to the finish line for the year.

Unfortunately you cannot. Managers like this are being phased out they're either quitting, retiring, or being let go of after everyone that was protecting them is gone. IAM is a line of business that consists of a lot of these types of people you are describing, they were given roles and positions based on their friendship score and not on their technical capabilities and in recent years IAM has had such high turnover that these types of people are finally being discovered and being phased out.
With this pointed out if you do want to move up then it's best to look elsewhere, Wells Fargo is not a place you want to ascend the ladder on. I have been in contact with a few director level people that were at the bank and left for other corporations and when they got to their new positions they were severely lacking in the roles that they were fulfilling. Wells Fargo has a way of demeaning and devaluing highly technical individuals and causing them to lose their skill set.
If you really want to move up and make more positive impact is best you go elsewhere. With that pointed out if you like being at Wells Fargo then the best way to fail upwards is find one of these managers who are part of that legacy upbringing and worship the ground they walk on. Such managers especially under IAM love hearing how godlike they are, st-----g their hubris will carry you to the levels you are looking for.
However if you do have a strong moral ethical backbone then you would not be the type of person who could stomach lying to such people just to lie... Just remember they know they're inferior and if you don't stroke their ego they're going to blacklist you and blame you as the scapegoat for everything whether you are part of it or not because they don't care about a team they care about their friends so you either get on board with the friendship train or just accept reality.
