Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Minimalist

Going to work today laughing about putting out the very least amount of effort as possible without getting fired, also thinking about more ways to get more days off work - paid of course.

I never thought our company would become so lazy! Ge-z

I never thought the company I am working for is so ruthless as I am reading on this site. Taking advantage of hardworking older employees by taking away benefits from the older employees who stayed because of the benefits and built a career. It does not matter to me as I have no pension other than what I create and the company match. My friends are here for the salary and if it does not increase while here then bye bye.

Someone said: "Be sure and teach your kids your excellent work ethic. What is wrong with you people? You were hired to do a job so do the job! Else you deserve the RIF. I know why I got my 10K bonus last year, because I do put in the work, and it shows."

And another one falls to the dread Stockholm syndrome.

Someone said: "This is the basic definition of coworkers."

No it's not. Who told you that.

“It's a real shame, because the most demoralizing part about being young is witnessing how much this company age discriminates. So many good, hardworking people around me have been cut down for seemingly no reason other than refusing to uproot their life for a company that doesn't care about them. The message they send: why even bother trying when the people busting their as--s are getting laid off? Focus on yourself and prioritize your own needs.”

Yep, that’s the conclusion I’ve come to.
Hearing about 5-day RTO starting in Jan.
Plan to just leave, so they’re losing another young technical person.

I’m a younger employee, the kind Stankey lies and says he wants to keep, of course I don’t have a pension.

The company isn’t your friend.
It’s a mechanism to extract value from the market.
They view you as nothing more than another asset.
Human capital, that’s what you are to them.
You should view them the same way, as a tool that you can use to extract value for yourself.

The boomer way of thinking about hard work, loyalty, ethics, responsibility towards your employer, it died around the same time pensions died.

The COBC and other ‘conduct’ things are only in place as a means for the company to control you.

Executives don’t follow them, they aren’t beholden to these rules, why should you be?

You’re working a job for one reason and one reason only, money. You provide service to the company, as long as you meet your deadlines and continue to create value you’re doing your part.

The company wants you to move cross country, out of your own pocket, drive to the office needlessly wasting gas, and time to dangerous cities - all of this without any additional compensation or relocation packages.
They effectively want you to take a pay cut and finance their reorganization.

Therefore, take as much as you can, they’re trying to sc--w you over. Sc--w them first and come out ahead.

“Be sure and teach your kids your excellent work ethic. What is wrong with you people? You were hired to do a job so do the job! Else you deserve the RIF. I know why I got my 10K bonus last year, because I do put in the work, and it shows.”

It’s 2024, there is no such thing as “work ethic” only value creation.
If someone can write a program in 3 months that increases value at a company 10% and they sell this program for $100 million dollars do they have more work ethic than the guy doing 40+ hour weeks for years?

If you have $50 million in assets and can passively generate $1m+ per year and not have to work at all do you have more work ethic than a lineman working outside for $80k a year?

The goal is to create enough value to extract more value for yourself - nothing more.
You only need to put in enough effort to continue to move up the salary bands and capture enough stock & assets to set yourself up, nothing more nothing less.

There’s no such thing as loyalty, or ethics in 2024. This is how CEO’s view the market, this is how you should view the market, the only thing that matters is the line goes up every year.

If that means job hopping, then you should be job hopping, if it means doing a few 50 hour weeks to push out that project and get a promotion then you should do that, if that means lying about moving to capture that next big bonus, stock match, insurance, and save money for 2025 - then lie your a-s off.

The only thing that matters, at all, is your own bottom line. Period.

LOL. Are you saying that wasting hours in the car per day is having a good work ethic?

“If there are other personnel at the hub, you have teammates. This is the basic definition of coworkers.”

If you work on software and are in a hub surrounded by people in marketing or some business related org and share no projects - are they really teammates?

Not all co-workers are “team mates” in the sense of the word that they work on the same things as you - especially in a company this large.

If you were at say, a startup and everyone’s goal was one central site, with a backend and an app - that provided some service and there were only like 50 people, then likely yes you are correct as everyone is working on a common project therefore passing ideas, data, and collaborating with someone even from marketing as an engineer would be valuable…but T is no start-up and these divisions have nothing in common.

Think he may be referring to an additional connection award and not the one everyone gets?

No one should be surprised, this is what happens when you turn your workforce against the company.

Use all that paid family care leave and sick time.

Use up your annual FMLA. "Trip and fall" accidents happen all the time.

You only got 10K? I got more than that and put in the minimalist effort. They don’t care how hard you work…..just that your butt’s in the chair 3 days a week in an “hub” where you may not have teammates and you make nice with your boss.
