Leave of Abesence - Way to get off of the lay off list?

I have been with WF for 16 years. I have never seen so many associates in WFA on leave of absence. Gal next to me was on it for 9 months. No idea why. Email is not ZZZ out so not pulling disability. Another guy has been on it for 3 months now. Again no zzz in email so not on temp or perm disability. I know of at least 5 close to me on leave of absence. No idea why but none of them are for major physical health things or new baby, adoption etc. Is this a way to get off of the layoff list or just some loophole? If I am just stressed out on life or WFA can I apply to take months off and get paid? How do you sign up for this? We just hear they will be back in two weeks and that message continues for months. What is the deal? 5 10 or 15 years ago would be hard pressed to find one person. Now it is everywhere..... this leave of abense thing. Maybe this is sabattical? I could have had 3 now if I was with Schwab.

I was on LOA for surgery, laid off and my 60 day non-working notice began the day my leave ended. Just ended 60-day last month and now on severance.

If they can do without you for 3 or more months they can do without you. Leave is not going to insulate you. Your severance will kick in i think when you are scheduled to return

I had a guy at my “office” disappear off the face of the earth for 4 months. He reappeared one day, I asked him what was up, and he just smiled and walked away.

Actually you can get short term disability benefits for mental health issues. Lincoln financial will approve if supported by your doctor and the doctor completes all of the paperwork. Speaking from personal experience.

There has been a substantial uptick in leaves lately. Most are personal so they are unpaid & your job is not protected. The leaves of absence also do not protect you from a lay off.

A coworker of mine was layed off during the time off for the newborn. Hard to insulate yourself.

It's unpaid and they don't have to have a job waiting for you when you return. I don't believe in that case that you would even be eligible for severance either.

Interesting observation. Employees are sick of the toxic atmosphere and are finding ways to save themselves. In my experience, you have to find a doctor to sign off on your LOA and that’s not easy to do. LOA does not save you from the layoff list. We had a gal in our department who was on LOA recovering from surgery and they had no problem with kicking her to the curb.

You can take a leave of absence for mental health issues, but it is unpaid though.
