Does anything happen to your severance if you apply to a lower paying job & then decide to not take it?

You can put a hold on the work number. see https://employees.theworknumber.com/employee-data-freeze
This prevents Wells from finding if you have a new employer. You can also tell your new employer not to report your new employment to the Work Number. This is an email you might want to send:

I'm reaching out to inquire about my employment information and The Work Number. I'm interested in understanding if there's an option to delay reporting my employment details to The Work Number for seven months.

I'm also mindful of how my employment history might be perceived. I want to ensure that my career progression is accurately reflected, and I'm concerned that having my employment information widely available could potentially create the impression that I've been job hopping.

If you take a job with another company DO NOT Tell Wells.
I got a job during my notice period. Only a fool would tell Wells HR they got a new job. Get your boundaries correct -- "they" severed you. You are no longer a part of "them".
Some people on this board have said that Wells can go to the IRS and inquire about your current employment status, W9 withholdings, SSA withholdings, etc. "They" can not. There are many, many laws protecting your privacy with the IRS and SSA. It takes an act of Congress to get one to inquire about the tax records of another.
Some have accepted the new position, depending how far into severance, and grand fathered benefits, PTO, etc from previous tenure. Once let go - got full severance for new and old time.
If you’re offered another role internally and you decline it, you lose what is left of your severance. So if you think it’s the wrong role, withdraw before you get an offer.
This is all spelled out in your packet.
I assume you mean internally? If so you should read the displacement docs because yes, if you are offered the position then decline you forfeit your severance from that point. Basically don’t do it unless you intend to take the position and are in it for longer than your severance would have been.
