Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Made a mistake at work

It's not a big deal, but it's not nothing either. Should I bring it up tomorrow and apologize, or just ride it out and hope no one catches on (it’s possible)? I’m nervous that owning up and saying sorry might hand them an excuse to put me on a PIP, which is something they don’t currently have. What’s the smarter move here?

Sounds like you need to set some life rules for yourself.

If you are ok with dishonesty it will catch up.

Be brave.

Life is a brief moment. Fill it with the right things.

I’m not judging you — this is more advice than anything.

Simple do the right thing.

People will remember more how you respond than what mistake you made. I’ve made some huge costly mistakes in my career but owned up to them and learned from them. I’m still here.

@OP We all make mistakes. Own it, fix it, and move on from it.

Fix it yourself and don’t mention it again. If you can’t fix it and it needs to be fixed (at risk of bigger issues that directly impact and implicate you) speak up now and document it as an NLI or LI. Everyone will clap.
If you can’t fix it but wouldn’t be implicated then ignore it and let someone else claim the W for finding and fixing it downstream

Blame it on someone else. That is the difference between you and the upper food chain.

Fail fast. Speak up, be transparent, move on.

What would be the ethical thing to do?

What would be the consequence?

If it is some silly work process or honest mistake, don’t worry about it. Likely they will have 10 people overseeing work processes rather than doing real work. If they find it, just say you are unaware and thank them for doing a good job.

If it is something that has major financial or safety impacts, then definitely speak up.

But never ever put yourself in a position to help your manager to cover up his mistakes. He needs to own his errors and not implicate you.

Keep your mouth shut. Management will use it against you in the next ranking session. Try to fix it if you can. If it can't be fixed don't say anything and start looking for another job just in case. If you say anything there'll be a report that will make your manager and her manager look bad. You'll be punished.

Just by asking this question you have demonstrated that you are PIP material either way. Good bye!
