Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Just moved to Dallas, and got my severance Friday

I just sold my home, moved my family, bought a new home at twice the monthly cost I had before, and now I have two weeks to find a new job or I’m going bankrupt. I don’t know what to do, I can’t believe they did this to me. These people are evil.

This is why a lot of good technicians refused to go management! The company can let you go if they don't like the color of your shirt that particular day!!
As craft they still have to go through the union, regardless of how strong or weak it may be!
I assume he became management after his 25 years in craft, that way he can tap into his tech pension if he needs to!

I don't know if this happens a lot but I do know it happened to a woman I work with in Business Marketing. She didn't buy a house when she moved to Dallas instead chose to rent. Was let go less than 3 months after signing the lease.

T cannot believe you actually agreed to do all of that. T thought would would just quit and they would be closer to their goal.

Never trust T.

T is not the same company it was 20 years ago.

Ethics are a thing of the past for T.

Good news is your life without T begins now and it will be so much better no matter what happens.

T is toxic and stung you bad. T is stinging many right now.

Go forth and be bold. Look for an agent offering 10% residual on telecom sales and build a nice residual income.

Life starts now.

There isn't anything in your story about H wnmich value you brought to the company. Was your role bringing in more revenue than what it cost AT&T to have you on the books? The situation is bad, and I have empathy for you. AT&T should have run the numbers before telling you to move. For anyone else still deciding. Run the numbers yourself first.

You’re just a number at T but at least there are a ton of opportunities to be just a number at another company and business is booming here in Dallas.

Likely a true story, but there is no guarantee that if you move they will keep you.. just does not say tha anywhere! ANd all those advising to go to a labor attorney... for what? Lose more $$??? not a chance in the world you would win against "T" I believe it even says there is no guarantee of a secure job if you choode to follow your job (I am not for "T" but just stating the obvious... that is why you dont sell you house and move for this sh-t company!

Oh I believe it. The chaos and stress this year, 2024 is insane. The dog and pony show continues. I was terminated on Friday, still had access to everything until Tuesday. Still don’t have my final check or exit paperwork. Oh and but the way I was on leave… 🤣.

“Has about 27 years.
Got tapped last Friday.
Just before the holidays.
Last day is Friday the 13th.
What a place.”
Your friend has known for at least the last 20 years this was coming any time.

Same happened to a peer in Service delivery. Three months in he was let go. He was smart about it though. Got a short term lease so was able to return to his home.

If you work for a telecom company......Don't buy a house! Don't buy a car! Don't buy a phone! And most importantly don't have kids! Good advise is sometimes hard to follow.

“Fairy Tails Can Come True,
It Can Happen To You.
If You’re Young At Heart.”
T has senior employees, so there is no way this could actually happen.

So sorry OP. Can you elaborate on this story?
Did you move because of FTW and while still within that timeline you were surplussed?

Positive note - Dallas is a great area to find new work vs where you might’ve moved from. Wishing you all the best!

With the amount of people asked to relocate and the numbers of people removed from payroll each month, it’s more likely this has happened multiple times, rather than not at all.

Lie about moving.
Collect full bonus next year
Collect connection awards
Have insurance for remainder - no COBRA required
Get company stock match til ‘move date’
Be FOW in meantime aka work from home
Time comes to move, ask for extension, maybe get extension, repeat prior steps.
No extension? This is my two weeks then.
Quit with more money than you would have had with ~2 months of severance.
Chill.
Find new job.

Why didn’t you just lie? Fu-k ethics, they have none, why do you?

When you talk to a lawyer, don’t remember to mention how you moved on your own dime when the CEO publicly lied about offering all employees “generous relocation packages”
