Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Tariffs will only make it worse for the auto industry worldwide

US Manufacturer (have to) will pass the cost on to consumers.
Foreign manufacturers will respond by placing tariffs on US imports.
US Consumers will reduce new car purchases as prices increase, demand decreases.
Foreign consumers will reduce new car purchases, demand decreases.
US vehicle exports decrease further hurting US manufacturers.
US and Foreign Manufacturers will reduce production to meet.
All resulting in an increase in layoffs in the auto industry worldwide.

You in the auto industry, start saving every penny. You will need it if the tariffs are put in place.

Who is down voting this lead comment!?! Folks, despite the inaccurate info in some of the responses, this is in fact how it works. Tariffs did not work before material sources and production became as globalized as it is today and they definitely will not work in this more global economy. US consumers will pay in the form of higher prices, US workers will pay in the form of lost corporate profit which will translate into lost jobs

Bring out the big ba--s, or the abominations.

What's life other than the severance of lifetime earnings. Best to be on the right side of history.

Foreign suppliers will have to eat the cost of the tariffs or lose customers.

@OP. I disagree. Yes, tariffs open the door for retaliation, but WE are the ones retaliating. China has already tariffs, restrictions, IP theft and currency devaluation in place. Many other countries have tariffs in place to protect their industries. And if any country wants to play chicken with us, we are the biggest economy of the planet, with the largest consumer market (accounting for 29% of global consumer spending). Let's play!

Regarding the auto industry, I am not planning to buy a vehicle anytime soon, because I don't like where we are headed. However, I'd buy japanese assembled in Japan, even with tariffs. Quality and safety matters the most for me. So it is already past time that the Detroit's Big 3 stop behaving like the 3 stooges, and fix their act, or go down.

So what when you lost your job in the automotive industry due to outsourcing. Both white and blue collar are getting shafted.
