Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

What the he-l happened with Exxon?

It used to be a decent company to work for. I’m a veteran, used to work for XOM a long time ago and came back recently. I adventured across the industry for years and I’ve witnessed the general decline. But XOM fundamentally changed for the worse. I’m near retirement, so I don’t care all that much. But If you are mid career, leave.

I worked at Exxon for 10 years out of college and then left to "pursue other interests," meaning I couldn't wait to get away from there. Spent another 10 years doing totally different jobs with several companies which I truly enjoyed. Then one day I get a call from Exxon asking me if I would consider coming back as a contractor. Well, I did. I immediately noticed that the supervisory/management people seemed less knowledgeable and competent from what I remembered ten years earlier, and they rarely went out of their way to support their team members. There was one manager I even considered to be unethical. Nevertheless, I stuck it out for another 10 years because the pay was great and as a contractor I didn't have to be caught up in the dreaded ranking process. Happily retired now.

I agree as I left exxon in 2002 to work for another major in the middle east. Exxon was great in the past and I enjoyed the work and the people. Fast forward to 2011 exxon offered me a lot of money to come back. They had to match my salary and ex pat compensation. At first it was alright but then it progressively got worse almost unbearable. I almost left in 2019 but decided to stay. I am stuck until at least 2026 when I can retire. My old company is waiting for me. Exxon has changed so much for the worst in twenty five years. I don t know how it continues to survive and get new victims to the squid game. Welcome to the meat grinder.

Big disconnect from management to workers. Friends and biases. Also echo chamber with head in the sand. Politics is toxic. If this place had to build its product we would be in trouble hour 1.

Yup greed and power. I am a scientist and have no concept of the power grabs . I only believe in good data and logic. I am of no use to the exxon of now.
