Was ATT targeted?

JOINT STATEMENT FROM THE FBI AND CISA ON PRC ACTIVITY TARGETING TELECOMMUNICATIONS
The U.S. Government is investigating the unauthorized access to commercial telecommunications infrastructure by actors affiliated with the Peoples Republic of China.
After the FBI identified specific malicious activity targeting the sector, the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) immediately notified affected companies, rendered technical assistance, and rapidly shared information to assist other potential victims. The investigation is ongoing, and we encourage any organization that believes it might be a victim to engage its local FBI field office or CISA.
Agencies across the U.S. Government are collaborating to aggressively mitigate this threat and are coordinating with our industry partners to strengthen cyber defenses across the commercial communications sector.

Thanks for the additional information even though it apparently made people mad. Glad (for lack of a better word) it was Verizon and not us this time.

Reducing cost is the priority. They give lip service to security while at the same time they have decimated the CSO and are offshoreing as much as they can get way with. What could possibility wrong? If there is a bad decision to be made, you can bet the farm Stankey & CO will make it.

Thanks China, now we all know which company the Fed uses for their phone service, or at least the one they care about getting hacked the most.

Well I would have been surprised if us or Verizon or T-Mobile were not not targeted.
This country runs on telecommunications and data and we're plugged into just like Verizon and T-Mobile almost all of the country somehow or another

At least some external cybersecurity expertise is being brought in to help manage this issue.

Supposedly there were specific targets.

"With less than two weeks before the US presidential election, the New York Times reported on Friday that a China-affiliated threat actor was discovered targeting communications from phones used by former President Donald Trump and vice presidential running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance.

The latest foreign-threat campaign appears to be “a wide-ranging intelligence-collection effort,” also reportedly targeting the communications of democratic rival Vice President Kamala Harris' staff, according to Times sources familiar with the matter.

“The US Government is investigating the unauthorized access to commercial telecommunications infrastructure by actors affiliated with the People’s Republic of China (PRC),“ the FBI and US Cybersecurity and Security Infrastructure Agency (CISA) said in a statement released Friday.

It appears the PRC hackers were able to successfully gain access to Verizon phone systems, after the FBI “identified specific malicious activity targeting the sector,” according to the joint statement. Cybersecurity insiders have identified Salt Typhoon, a known nation-state adversary and Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) group sponsored by the Chinese government.

Who wants to wager how it happened?

This is why when you are responsible for the entire countries communications infrastructure, you don’t allow non Americans to work or have access to your network.

It’s an obvious security risk.
