Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Forced Rankings

Forced rankings can be incredibly controversial, especially when used to manage costs at the expense of employees. While it may not always be illegal, it certainly raises ethical concerns. Transparency and fair treatment in the workplace are crucial. If you feel strongly about this, it might be worth consulting with a legal professional to explore your options.

I’m a manager and I see how we are forced to rank. However, I’m actually fighting for every dime I can get for them as they worked their as--s of all year. That makes me a squeaky wheel target.

Forced rankings are an underperformer’s dream. Just do minimum work and throw people under the bus, rinse and repeat. All forced rankings do is turn coworkers against each other.

If you get "partially met" or "below expectations" that is your sign that you're on the list for layoffs.

@wsz+1vfzdq2Q - it comes from above every year. We get told we’re only allowed to have so many exceeds regardless if you earned it or not. And eith all the cascaded down goals now, its not hard to have people on the team not hit in all areas. Its intentional

Consulting with an attorney is good advice. Additionally you can file an EEOC charge.

BNY might retaliate against you once you do so, so be sure to document everything.

Some of the behaviors are ethically wrong, but others are actually illegal.

If you aren’t sure, you should go to www.eeoc.gov

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race, color, religion, s-x (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related conditions, gender identity, and s-xual orientation), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information.
The laws apply to all types of work situations, including hiring, firing, promotions, harassment, training, wages, and benefits.

It's also a slimy way for them to control costs. By forcing 10% of people to get a bad rating, they can then give them no raise the following year.
Rotate the bad rankings around your group and over time, they save a ton of money. That raise you didn't get leaves your baseline lower, so even if you get a good rating the next few years, any percentage increase is now based on a lower salary.

Decisions not made by managers, it's at a higher level forcing the ranks.

Also, why do self evaluations and discussions in December? They already have a preliminary list of rankings. What we say on self evaluations is meaningless and total bullsh-t.

It would be great to socialise this on LinkedIn, perhaps under one of RV's posts talking about the 'culture' at BNY.

All about the $$ and age. BNY needs to be taken down for unethical behavior. Force rank so they pay out more to themselves.

It's bloody outrageous! Do managers pick the most expensive person or the weakest? Also how can you compare Associate v. Director level.
AND, who actually makes these decisions because my managers a pretty decent guy and pretty sure he wouldn't stand for this nonsense 😤
