Thread regarding Ford layoffs

The solution

Former metrologist back I laid out several problems in my last past and I want to explain how to fix them. Never point out a problem without a solution that's how I lasted 40 years at Ford :).

  1. Fire Farley
  2. Increase pay for the really skilled and knowledgeable people, these top 10% do 90% of the work. I should know I was one
  3. Go 100% on IC.... For now... EVs have no market right now....
  4. Sell off Ford Credit
  5. Quit over paying software people and underpaying the other engineers.
  6. Find ways to collaborate with GM to reduce costs

6 Reduce the price if the F150. I drive one but I bought it used, a white f150 of course. They cost as much as a house now and people straight up can't afford them.

  1. Get rid of Lincoln, it's a burden to the company and isn't worth the overhead.
  2. Never forget the factory workers they are always under treated.
  3. Worry less about immediate profits and focus on long term financial sustainably.

Thank you
Former Metrologist

Farley needs to go, if a junior analyst made as many mistakes as he did, they would have been fired years ago. Somehow he duped the Ford family into thinking he was executive material because of success at Toyota, which had a deep bench supporting him.

In Canada, we typically refer to materials engineering disciplines as Metrologist's. Went to school in Alberta where it's well known. Surprised our friends down south have yet to adopt the terminology.

@1xno+1vgrkC8i: This is keY: 6a - It is not about reducing the price of the F150, but start manufacturing cheaper trims.

I parked next to a new Maverick XL the other day. beautiful. steel rims, minimal garbage electronics and other stuff on the instrument panel. still has more features than most cars ford has made over the decades. Ranger w/ steelies looks good too.

they could make a MachE XL and get rid of a ton of stupid stuff you dont need too

too bad We aren't in charge haha

I think you're confusing metrology and metallurgy; similar sounding.

@1xno, I disagree that we should have the Ford family in charge of growing a plant in a pot 🪴for two reasons. First, there is no way that group could pull of something that complex and second, the innocent plant never did anything to anyone. We should put their mental energy towards toasting bread, lightly.

Must keep Ford Credit. They are a massive asset when it comes to financing our customers for these very expensive SUV's and trucks. GM sold GMAC in 2008 or 9 and regretted it as a captive finance source. They have had to rebuild it and Stellantis has launched their own credit company and hired many separated or retired FMCC people. I agree on the fire Farley comment.

@OP. I kind of disagree with your list...

1- Fire Farley. Yes, we agree on that one, but include the whole C-suite and the BoD (after all, they allowed Farley to destroy the company). Please send the Ford family on an extended vacation, or assign them small projects they can manage by themselves outside FMC, like growing a plant in a pot. That should keep them busy. Keep them away from FMC and the Lions.
2 - Increase pay for the workers that contribute. Fire everyone else, including the PowerPoint crowd and the FnF club. Less people in the company makes it easier to work, with less red tape and less delays. Reduce LL levels, flatten the hierarchy.
3 - Go strong on ICE, but keep working on hybrids. Unplug the BEVs.
4 - Nah, I rather keep Ford Credit. Small team compared with the rest, and they make a healthy profit every year.
5 - Quit overpaying clueless software people, hire talented people, and boost the Mechanical Engineers support (after all, the software only works if we sell the vehicles)
6 - Disagree on GM collaboration. Maybe I am wrong on this one, but GM has the same issues we have because the culture is very similar. We should collaborate and learn from the best, and GM is far from that.
6a - It is not about reducing the price of the F150, but start manufacturing cheaper trims. Sure, the website says there are F150 selling for $36K, but they are rarer than unicorns, since Farley is pushing for the most expensive trims. Even when ordered online, the company delays those for months, hoping customers get tired of waiting and buy more expensive trims.
7 - Get rid of Lincoln... Agreed. In a poll, only 2% of people considered Lincoln as a luxury brand. However, Lincoln owners like their rides. Maybe we can keep something around, if it is profitable.
8 - Not sure about this. The latest contract is a steal... for the factory workers.
9 - Long term health over quaterly profits... My man! Now you are talking! Stop chasing every rainbow in the sky, just focus on the boring routinely task of making the best vehicles we can, and always improving those.

Thank you
Current Engineer still at Ford.

In case some may not know, a Metrologist deals in various materials sciences and use cases. For example, a Metrologist would be the key person to study the change from steel to aluminum like on the F150. I'm not sure how big the Metrologist department is but imagine fairly large due to recent studies in composites and rare earth material that could be used in the future.

The only point I don't agree with is selling Ford Credit. Ford Credit is what is keeping us afloat. In fact, they shoud give employees a reduced loan rate as a benefit.
