Is one notified they won’t be receiving their severance or do the paychecks just not appear?

They'll just stop after the last one.
In my state, CA, I started getting notices that my health care would be ending, since the health insurance continues to be paid while the severance is paid.

No advance notice…they just stop the on the last day of severance period.
You would get a severance agreement explaining that.
