Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

RTO/Surplus Hose Job

I thankfully got my surplus package earlier this year after refusing to move to ATL. Retirement supplement package thanks to AT&T --- I was going to retire in 2024 anyway! So happy I'm out, but feeling for a number of friends that will be impacted by the upcoming 5 day RTO rule. There are a number of good people who "agreed" to "move" to one of the hub cities by renting an apartment/hotel to hit the 3 day/week requirement but keep their permanent residence without officially moving their family. The new 5 day RTO rule will now throw that on its head. And those good people will no longer have the option to take a severance package vs up-rooting their family in this era of higher housing prices and mortgage interest rates. Shame on you AT&T!

I went off payroll this October. I bled everything I could out of this company while it was still relatively good to work for. Pension, nice fat 401k, 6 month severance, and a really nice retirement gift. Don't worry your CEO has this in his crosshairs too. I feel so liberated now that I have left the company it's hard to define. No more worrying about stupid and senseless RTO 5 days a week, reducing severance ,doing everything faster and faster in less time, eliminating retirement gift, and on an on. The CEO is orchestrating all these moves to alienate the workers to quit. He can't stand the criticism he receives so he enacts his revenge on the workers. AT&T has been around since the late 1800's and still a low 20 something stock price.Trump would have given him the cobra and fired him years ago if he was in charge. The current CEO is the worst I ever witnessed in my decades at AT&T.
I wake up every day now retired and so thankful I don't have to be part of his sick mandates anymore. AMEN

“Your two week severance period is to look for another job, clean your desk out, get all your files cleaned off your PC, clean out your desk, get your retirement party planned, benefits in order, etc. Two weeks isn’t long to do all that.”
Most importantly, this period is to make final updates on turnover documentation.

It really is American Thugs & Thieves here. Employees bragging about having no ethics while trying to hold themselves up for review as if their actions are honorable in some twisted way.

Your two week severance period

What is this "two week severance period?" People who said they won't move aren't initially given a separation date. When they finally do get told the time has come, they are most often getting a week. Like "this is your last week." People told Monday their off payroll date is 11/11.

Good job on taking the hint. Anyone who moves for this company is failing the world's most obvious sh1t test. If you are asked to move, you are being fired, just the slow, painful way. Rip off the band aid.

RTO and the “hubs” are a layoff exercise period.

So you feel bad for people who tried to game the system? Huh?

Yup, and I'll do it when I get the chance. The company's been sc--wing people over for years, so it's only fair to get sc--wed over back with a few broken promises about relocation.

If you want consistency, don't relocate people for no reason.

It really is awful for those who agreed to relocate. I feel like they should get another option to choose severance instead.

So it was worth it to them to find a way to Rto 3 days a week. They still have an opportunity to keep their jobs. Some people don't. No one should relocate only for the job unless it's a place you would want to live for other reasons. They won't get severance for refusing 5 day rto but extended their time as a full time employee with benefits. That might be worth more than if they decided not to relocate when the issue came up. Everyone has to weigh all of the options for their personal situation and plan for worse case scenario.

Only a simple minded person would not have predicted there would be a return to 5 days in the office at some point. Not saying it makes sense but t was inevitable. Following the work to a “hub” is the real problem for your friends not RTO. However, if someone made a choice to work in a city that is not where their home and family is that was their decision and they have to live with it. Totally su-ks that T made them choose but ultimately they chose on their own. There is always an option to make another choice. T is not the only employer on the planet and everyone has to make tough decisions.

Ironic that you called these good people.

The house always wins. At least T is getting a working severance from them before they are shown the door.
